BBC - How determined are the settlers?
Monday, 18 April, 2005, 16:20 GMT 17:20 UK

In a few months, the Gaza Strip will be physically sealed off and declared a closed military zone. The Israeli Defence Force and police will be deployed in one of the biggest military operations in Israel's history.

A few weeks later there will not be a single Jewish family left in the 380 square-kilometre Gaza Strip - at least that is what the Israeli government is hoping.

The government, as part of its disengagement plan aims to relocate some 8,000 settlers from 21 settlements in the Gaza Strip, and just over 650 settlers from four settlements in the northern West Bank.

The plan is about to move into its operational stage but many settlers are determined to make things as difficult for the government as possible.

The spectre of violent opposition, military disobedience and even civil war has been raised. Only last week, Mr Sharon said the atmosphere "looks like the eve of a civil war".
