The Magistrate
(This is repeated here, but I thought it work repeating.)

I have received word from his family that our friend, The Magistrate, has had a minor health setback and is in the hospital at this time. He is doing well - bored and evidently a little grumpy from being cooped up and away from his computer. But he is well none-the-less and will probably be home sometime middle to late next week.

Thought it would be nice to send him some well wishes for a speedy recovery.

1. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Sir...
Magistrate, I hope when you read this thread that yr well on yr way to being up and about again. Get better quickly. Hospitals suck, hospital food sucks even more, and I hope you haven't got any Nasty Cranky Nurses looking after you. Our friendship is one of the most valued things I've gained while I've been at DU, so from one friend to another, those doctors better have been looking after you real well, otherwise they're lucky that this temperamental Australian is on the other side of the world and can't kick some arse. You deserve the best...

Look after yrself, my friend...

Lots of love...

Violet...

I insist you return at once. Your presence is sorely needed to keep the hotheads like myself in order. The only excuse we will except from you is that this brief hospital stay was an ingenious plot by you to get a very special sponge bath from a young nubile nurse.

22. Greetings from a wife
Many thanks to Mr. Lithos for posting this thread and to all who have expressed their well-wishes for The Magistrate's recovery. Your good will is much appreciated by his entire family, but by none so much as himself. A printout of this thread is by his bedside, where it gives him cheer.

The Mage is too well-mannered to give the nurses much grief. He confines most of his grumbling to us. We tease him that there are easier ways to get a spongebath, but he just responds with an arch look. ;)

We expect he will soon return here with his impeccable logic and inimitable style. Thanks again for missing him. He misses you too.

30. Why is it a cheap shot, "Sir" ?
If I had a handle implying unlimited authority and let's say a magisterial bearing, and then I persisted in adding patronizing honorifics to my every response, then I might be guilty of excess pomposity too.

As to what Mitzvahs I happen to believe in, I believe in the Ten Commandments. And when they say "Do Not Steal" I take this as applying to states (even Jewish states). This has more to do with my apostasy than the commandment to visit the sick.

If I'm ever in the hospital, feel free to insult me with whatever trumped-up charge you like !

36. Perhaps it IS little observed,
but as I sat in temple with the ten commandments looking down on me I could not help but marvel at the fact that a "Jewish" state has made the theft of others' lands its official policy. And the fact that so many Jews apparently have no difficulty justifying this situation tells me that something is definitely wrong. I personally DO NOT WANT the property of others, even it is given to be me by mistake. A Jewish State built on the lands of others is no small matter.

Will you EVER start to wonder if the State of Israel was a bad idea ?

44. hmmmm...
I have yet to sit in a temple with the ten commandments looking down on me, are you sure you weren't in a courthouse?...

you do have the guilt trip part nailed though...

how's this for a commandment - Thou shalt share and share alike (cause half a loaf is better than none)...

why dwell on what might have been a bad idea in the past, when you can focus on what will be a good idea for the future - two states for two peoples...

will you ever wonder, as Musharraf asked his countrymen recently, must we be more Palestinian than the Palestinians?...

45. Well, I always thought that's what they were
Most of them started with the word "LO" in Hebrew. Perhaps I was wrong.

If you're considering new commandments, here's my proposal:

THOU SHALT NOT OPPRESS OTHERS

As to the two states idea, I'm not optimistic. Perhaps if Israel, the West Bank and Gaza were combined, then split more evenly with a nice gentle curve following the Mediterranean, this might be fair.
An idle thought...

56. It Is, Ma'am
Edited on Fri Jul-18-03 01:34 PM by The Magistrate
A perfect example of the old tag: "Evil to him who evil thinks." A person who conceives himself superior to those who disagree with his views, and who sets out to belittle them as a chief desire in argument, would naturally impute such intention to others. Old lags around here will know, when it is my intent to belittle, there is no conceivable doubt of it....

When asked whether evil ought to be repaid with good, the Master replied: "With what, then, do I repay good? Repay good with good; repay evil with correction."

I personally find pomposity extremely distressing in a forum meant for the free exchange of views. Likewise, the use of epithets seems quite regrettable. But perhaps you disagree.

37. Back Home At Last
Thank you all very much for the kind comments; it was most gratifying, and did indeed provide much cheer during my hospital stay.

Apparently, a bad bout of chest pains lasting some hours the Sunday before last was in fact a heart attack, but being something of a stoic, perhaps more than is good for me, the episode did not seem to me anything worth summoning assistance for. When a similar episode began late last Thursday, the Mother of The Children pulled rank and summoned the city ambulance. The hospital let me go finally a few hours ago; the stay was not too bad, except for the enforced idleness and boredom. This is my second bout with this sort of thing, the first being five years ago: all my coronary arteries now are propped open with stents, and there is a small cup of various pills waiting for me each morning. It will probably still be some days before I am back up to form, but I did want to let you all know everything is well as can be expected, and to thank you all for your kind thoughts.

"LET'S GO GET THOSE BUSH BASTARDS!"

I did a search and this thread wasn't yet locked, so I kicked it. I'm sorry, my bad! However, I knew that you would get more replies, if I did. You must realize that you are very necessary to DU and how much people care. I was discouraged and I felt that this was it, for me, no matter how important I consider the I/P issue to be. Thanks for your knowledge, wisdom, and most of all for not losing it, as others do here.
