European Jews speak out
Representatives of Jewish communities in three European countries this past week not only leveled unusually harsh criticism against their governments but risked a backlash by making their complaints public.

In recent days, the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities decried Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey's visit to Yasser Arafat's grave during her state visit to the region two weeks ago; the Norwegian-Israel Center against anti-Semitism upbraided Norway for discrimination against Israel; and the Committee Representing Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF) lambasted the French government for doing too little to quash anti-Semitism there, and for actually encouraging anti-Semitism through its diplomatic policies.

Erez Uriely, founder and director of the Norwegian-Israel Center Against anti-Semitism (NIS), said his public letter to Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik was "the strongest statement we have ever made." He took the government to task for "unreasonable criticism of Israel," for " Israel not to respond if the Palestinian extremists break the cease-fire" without also asking the Palestinians to refrain from responding to targeted killings and for turning a blind eye to Palestinian terrorism in general.

Regarding "double standards," the NIS letter states: "We note that Norway sends warplanes and soldiers to Afghanistan to fight terrorism, although it has not been affected by it, instead of using the Norwegian peace mediators and peace strategists, which you demand for Israel. Here also you demand differently of the Jews in Israel, who are hard hit by terrorism. This is discrimination."
