Vice Prime Minster Ehud Olmert on Friday said Israel should continue high-level contacts with the Palestinians despite the resumption of Palestinian violence against soldiers in Hebron, Gaza, and the capture of a Palestinian youth with an explosive device at the Hawara checkpoint.
"If our estimation of the situation is that there is an opportunity - then we must take a risk. The higher the risk, it is possible that the opportunity will also be higher. We must try to find a balance between the risks and the opportunities," Olmert told Army Radio.
Mahmoud Tabouk, a 15-year-old Palestinian with an explosives belt, a makeshift rifle and M16 bullets, was arrested by soldiers manning the Hawara checkpoint south of Nablus on Thursday afternoon.
Tabouk revealed that he had been instructed to hand the belt and weapon to someone waiting on the other side of the checkpoint. Security officials believe he was dispatched by Fatah's Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades in Nablus.
