The bodies of as many as 47 Israeli soldiers, the town criers said, were strewn about the rubble of the besieged Jabalya refugee camp. Hamas had struck its greatest-ever, guerrilla-style blow.

"We send congratulations to the people and to Hamas ... give thanks to God for this successful operation," a voice bellowed in Arabic from an amplified mosque loudspeaker within earshot of a Gaza City hotel housing foreign journalists.

But even as the refugees of Jabalya rushed into the streets, sweets in hand to share their joy, it became apparent that this end of the coastal Gaza Strip was in the grip of a mass delusion.
