Rightist MKs protest plan to compensate settlers
By Haaretz Service
The National Religious Party will quit the coalition within two weeks if the government plans to begin evacuating settlements in August, Nissan Slomiansky, chairman of the party's Knesset faction, said Thursday.
The National Security Council and the Prime Minister's Office proposed Wednesday that the government begin offering compensation in August to settlers wishing to leave the Gaza Strip and West Bank settlements slated for evacuation.
The timetable for evacuation, which drew angry responses from right-wing politicians Thursday, proposes that people who have been living in the settlements slated for withdrawal since at least June 6 (when the cabinet passed the revised disengagement plan) would be able to leave their homes and collect compensation beginning in August.
Army Radio on Thursday quoted a senior source in the PMO as saying he told Slomiansky the evacuation proposal must be examined by government ministries before it can be implemented.
