Peres: Likud poll proves party is subordinate to the settlers

The Labor Party's Knesset faction opened the summer session of the parliament with a stinging condemnation of the defeat of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan in an internal Likud referendum.



Leader of the opposition and Labor Party Chairman MK Shimon Peres said that the results of the poll showed that the Likud was subordinate to the settlers.

"When Arik Sharon, the leader of the Likud, says that Gaza must be evacuated, will Uzi Landau stay in Gaza? Is it comprehensible that the 50,000 people who participated in the Likud referendum will decide for 10 million people," asked the elder statesman.

"The Labor Party must do all it can to enable the majority to have its say in a democratic manner. I suggest that we hold on to the broadcast camp - to evacuate Gaza and pull forces back to the Negev," he said......
