Israel tells UN that Syria, Lebanon must rein in Hezbollah

UNITED NATIONS - Israel told the United Nations on
Friday that raids on northern Israel by Hezbollah
guerrillas in southern Lebanon threatened to stoke
regional tensions and undermine Middle East peace
efforts.

The most recent attack - the
third of the weekend - came
Saturday evening, when the
guerillas fired anti-aircraft
missiles across the
Israel-Lebanon border, damaging
an apartment in Kiryat Shmona
and leaving two people
suffering from shock.

"This latest escalation in Hezbollah attacks
confirms that the terrorist organization, and
its sponsoring states, continue to seek to
destabilize the region, despite Israel's
withdrawal from South Lebanon over three years
ago," Ambassador Dan Gillerman wrote UN
Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Can we expect a UN resolution?

1. I don't think Israel should be telling the UN
to do anything. Prehaps because they are one of the biggest violators of UN reolutions.

2. Keeping Peace
If the UN is a world forum for keeping peace, and in view of the attacks, the reference is necessary.

If Israel plans to defend the citizens from attack, the unacceptable activity must be made notice of. This was a problem in the early 1980's as well.

4. If Israel
"If Israel plans to defend the citizens from attack,"

If that happened, Israel would condemned around here and posters would dig up articles outlining that Hezbollah are really a bunch of nice guys who are misunderstood (which is what happens from time to time when people here defend Hamas). Then we'd rationalizations for the Hezbollah attacks along the lines that they are so outraged and desperate over Israelis trying to live their lives within the borders of Israel that they just have to attack families in their homes with missles. So it's Israel's own fault that Hezbollah attacks them and if they'd just give in to Hezbollah's every demand the attacks would stop and there would be peace.

Sound silly? That's the argument I read here almost every day when some people here excuse the suicide bombers and condemn Israel and the IDF for having the audacity to actually try to defend herself against them.

5. Annan says its a blunt violation
A limited response was carried out:

Israel says won't tolerate violence in north after Hezbollah kills teen

In reaction to the firing, Israel Air Force helicopters
attacked a Hezbollah artillery position in southwest Lebanon,
from which the shells were fired.

6. conversely
I'm sure if Israel invaded Lebanon I'm sure we would have to hear about how Lebanon doesn't exist and never existed and how they are really Syrians and they already have a home and if they don't like being second class citizens to the new Jewish settlers they can all push off for Syria :eyes:

An oversight no doubt.
