Israeli troops who refused to fight for unjust cause
snip..

But they are members of a remarkable group, the Sayeret Matkal, Israel's equivalent of the SAS. And what makes them even more extraordinary in a society that holds its armed forces in such high esteem - in fact, what has earned them damnation from all over the country - is that they told their commanders that they refuse to serve in the Palestinian territories.

snip..

Since then they have been villified and supported in the Israeli media and have received death threats. In their first interview with the foreign media, they told the London-based Observer newspaper that they felt compelled to act after witnessing Israeli soldiers behaving in a way that was unimaginable a few years ago.

1. I heard one of these men speak a month or so ago
he made it very clear that he felt that the occupation of palestine was wrong for the Israeli people. I felt even though he loves Israel he has a more holistic view and some compassion for the Palestinians. He believes all the border checkpoints were crippling the palestiians and that the wall would have been OK had they stayed within the apporpriate border but they did not. What the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians is allmost as bad as how the Jews were treated in Germany. Putting walls around cities leaving only a small opening, cutting people off from their land and rendering them unable to grow food. etc.

If a movie was made that showed the truth of how life is for the Palestinian people......people would be appalled at how they are treated.

2. thanks for your reply..
a documentary was made by the great australian journalist John Pilger called "Palestine is still the issue"..although the forces of the right attempted to smear the producer and the content of the film, it was still shown to the public...well at least here in australia and in britain..I very much doubt the Israeli lobby would allow this to be aired in the US..heres a link..http://pilger.carlton.com/palestine

5. Did you watch it when it was on here?
I've only seen it once on SBS about a year ago now. It was a pretty powerful documentary...

3. This cannot stand.
What the Israelis are doing to the Palestinians is allmost as bad as how the Jews were treated in Germany.

How the Jews were treated in Germany was that they were rounded up and transported in cattle cars to concentration camps where the healthy people were worked and starved until they died and where the less healthy people were immediately killed, typically by gassing them. Oh, yes, there were also the medical experiments.

Anything happening in the occupied territories bears absolutely no comparison to what happened to Jews in Germany.

4. That's very true...
such a comparison completely denies scale.

Six million Jews were brutally slaughtered during the Holocaust by Hitler and the Nazis.

Perhaps thirty thousand, at most, innocent Palestinians have been killed, many accidentally, in all the decades of Israel's existence.

There is really no legitimate way to compare the two in terms of scale and effect.

6. You are right
but does that justify what the Israelis are now doing to the Palestinians?

7. No, but...
but does that justify what the Israelis are now doing to the Palestinians?

... It would place some perverted, upside-down sort of moral equivalence between the two situations.

There is no comparison.

9. Traitors
They should be prosecuted vigorously. I will leave it at that.

10. They are not traitors...
Those who danger Israel by refusing to make peace and continuing to oppress the Palestinians are the traitors.

Those who see this and refuse to participate in it are heroes.
