It's the security fence or loans, US tells Israel
The United States will tell Israel that recently approved loan guarantees may be reduced in proportion to the amount Israel spends on a new security fence and on Jewish settlements.

The National Security Adviser, Condoleezza Rice, is expected to tell senior officials in the Government of the Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, that the US will not provide resources that will help Israel implement a policy Washington opposes.

A spokesman for the US National Security Council, Michael Anton, said: "We've made clear to the Israelis in public and private settings that the fence is a concern. And we've had many conversations the highest levels about the fence."

20. when has bush *really* tried to talk tough with Sharon?

while bush slapped sharons hand every now and than, that always struck me as a foreplanned part of the show. Do you know something I don't know?

5. don't know whether I believe it, but if this is true...
...it's the first remotely rational element of U.S. foreign policy toward Israel that I've seen in a LONG time. Actually threatening to damp down the money pipeline between our wallets and Israeli apartheid? Damn, I never thought I'd live to see the day! Now if they'll only follow through....

8. Funny ...I dont hear bitching about other fences.
India extending fence into Kashmir

http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/215/nation/India_extending_fence_into_Kashmir+.shtml

Ratan Singh, an Indian rice farmer, used to have trouble sleeping. His village lies close to Pakistan, and in the past two years he has seen more than a half-dozen villagers and hundreds of cattle die in cross-border shootings. But since India built a thick mud wall and an 8-foot-high, 3-tier barbed-wire fence near the border in Kashmir, the guns have fallen silent.

''We are safe now, and I sleep peacefully,'' said Singh, 80. But he has a new problem. With the border fence that Indian soldiers erected near the turbulent, zigzag boundary last year, most of his farmland now falls on the other side, exposed to the Pakistani patrol posts. ''I am too scared to go to my farm now,'' said Singh, as he pointed toward his land.

The fence is part of India's ambitious project to seal its entire 1,800-mile border with Pakistan. Even as India embarks on a peace process with its rival this summer, the massive effort has come to illustrate the deep suspicion, hostility, and paranoia that have bedeviled relations between the neighbors for more than half a century.

Construction of the fences began in the late 1980s in the state of Punjab, when India faced an uprising by armed Sikh separatists and weapons were being smuggled from Pakistan. The fences now cover almost half the border, at a cost so far of $300 million. India is pushing ahead with work in Jammu and Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state, to stop Islamic guerrillas from entering from Pakistan. India accuses Pakistan of training and arming militants who are fighting to end India's rule in Kashmir. The two nations have fought two of their three wars over the region.

9. BTW EVERYONE...Rebels Behead Father, Son in Indian Kashmir
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030806/wl_nm/kashmir_dc_1

Suspected Muslim rebels beheaded a father and son in Kashmir (news - web sites) on Wednesday, accusing them of helping Indian forces, police said.

Separatist violence has continued in the Himalayan region despite a recent thaw in ties between India and Pakistan who have fought two of their three wars over the area since 1947.

"Militants abducted and later beheaded Abdul Ahad Sheikh and his son," a police official said. The killings took place in Baramulla district in northern Kashmir.

Civilians are also often killed in clashes between the rebels and troops in the Muslim majority region, where more than 38,000 have died in an almost 14-year revolt against New Delhi's rule.

India accuses Pakistan of aiding the revolt, a charge Islamabad denies.

22. No he didn't...

His pattern is one of bashing Muslims no matter how tenuous the connection. You see, the article is about a fence. So he can post this off-topic bullshit about a fence in Kashmir. Then, using the bullshit connection to Kashmir, he can post more off-topic bullshit about some decapitations.

Sort of, the "Look over there" gambit with a lot of tsking about how horrible those Muslims are. Of course the whole purpose is to derail the dialog and push the LGF brand of intolerance.

A wet newspaper across the nose or multi-syllable words usually send him packing.

12. Kashmir is a disgrace
but there is a limit to US influence over the Vajpayee government and everything Israel does is done at the US pleasure and in this case expense.

We got pissed at them for building nukes. Israel helped them build nukes, Israel has nukes and we didn't care when they built them and the money didn't hiccup when they aided India in it's program, but India got hit with the stick over it.

Anyway, Kashmir isn't like anywhere else, it doesn't resemble in any the Palestinian/Israeli conflict as the people themselves don't have a consensus on much of anything except that they wish hindu and muslim radicals would leave them alone.
