Meeting to Address Israeli Strike on Ship

The State Department will cast a spotlight next week on the 1967 Israeli attack on the U.S. spy ship Liberty where 34 American servicemen were killed.

Israeli, Arab, British and Canadian diplomats have been invited to attend a conference Monday and Tuesday at the department's Henderson auditorium.

A. Jay Cristol, a former U.S. bankruptcy court judge who has written about the incident, will be a featured speaker.

1. I am skeptical of this 'conference'

With conservative Israeli apologist A. Jay Cristol as a featured speaker, you have to wonder just how serious the get-together really is. Cristol's bogus theories have been blown apart by Liberty survivors: we have to ask why would he be chosen to be a premier speaker here?

The Cristol Travesty (The Liberty Incident) is a collection of half truths, deliberate omissions, errors, distortions, and outright fabrications. It is "the Big Lie" incarnate. The author uses a smoke and mirrors technique to keep the reader from seeing the numerous contradictions and inconsistencies offered.

Each of us wants to give the other person the benefit of the doubt. If we see a small error, we generally assume that it was an inadvertent mistake, not a deliberate attempt to deceive. At some point, however, in becomes clear that some people do publish erroneous material in a deliberate attempt to deceive. That is the case with the Cristol Travesty.

There are so many factual errors, quotes taken out of context, misquotes, and similar errors that it is impossible to conclude that the author is simply incompetent, rather than deliberately deceitful. The Liberty Incident is a poorly written propaganda screed and nothing more. It contradicts itself innumerable times. It misstates evidence and ignores important evidence. It contains enormous logical holes that can only be attributed to partisan bias.

I believe the popular term to describe that would be "whitewash"..
