UN expected to ask Hague court to rule on security fence

<snip>

"Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom consulted with experts in international law today ahead of this evening's vote in the United Nations General Assembly, which is expected to ask the International Court of Justice in The Hague to rule on Israel's security fence. Israeli officials said the move would cast a doubt on the Jewish State's right to defend itself.

Sharon and Shalom agreed to wait for outcome of the vote, expected to pass with an "automatic majority." Should the need arise, Israel will present its case before the court and argue that the fence is a legal barrier designed to protect lives, they decided.

The proposed resolution will ask the court at The Hague to consider the legal consequences of the fence and "urgently render an advisory opinion," said General Assembly spokeswoman Michele Montas."

"An Israeli legal authority said that a ruling by the International Court of Justice would merely have a declaratory status, but would be a "Mark of Cain" against the State of Israel, Yediot Aharonot reported. The official added that Israel would have a hard time defending the legality of the security fence, as it was a unilateral action that in some cases seriously harmed the Palestinian civilian population."

4. By that logic
The rest of the world should get rid of USA, to protect their citizens, because USA is - that is the majority opinion - the greatest threat, the bane of the earth.

8. Fantastic
It was obvious the Palestinians should have pressed for this instead of just a standard (hence, easy to ignore), GA resolution.

Both the main Israeli newspapers have ran "Israel concerned" articles regarding a Hague decision in the last few days too. Translated, that means "Sharon concerned". Which can only be a good thing.
