"Jerusalem - Israel is to pay 1.5 million shekels ($330 000) to 75 Palestinian shop owners whose stores in the centre of the West Bank town of Hebron were ordered to close for more than two years or were damaged by radical settlers, military radio said on Monday.

The unprecedented decision was taken by the ministers of justice and defence on the recommendation of the Supreme Court, the radio added.

The shops had been closed for "security reasons" by the army under pressure from the some 600 settlers who live in a Jewish enclave in the centre of Hebron which includes the Tomb of the Patriarchs, a Biblical site holy to both Jews and Muslims."
