Netanyahu at UN: Palestinians can get state only after peace with Israel
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday that the Palestinians must first make peace with Israel, and only after get their state, during his address to the UN General Assembly in New York.

"Israel is prepared to have a Palestinian state in the West Bank, but we're not prepared to have another Gaza there," Netanyahu stressed. "The Palestinians must first make peace with Israel, and only then get their state."

He spoke Friday shortly after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, defying U.S. and Israeli opposition, asked the United Nations to accept them as a member state, sidestepping nearly two decades of failed negotiations.

Netanyahu responded by saying Israel was renewing its hand of peace to countries such as Egypt, Jordan and Turkey, "but most especially, I extend my hand to the Palestinian people, with whom we seek a just and lasting peace."

Unfortunately, Abbas seems determined to bypass that "peace" part.

1. "As we continue to colonize your land" he should have said.
How long exactly has Israel been colonizing the West Bank and 'talking' about peace?

2. A little over 3000 years
How long have the "Palestinians" been making war against them?

5. While we're at it,
How long have the "Palestinians" even existed? This "ancient" people have only been around since about 1964. The only time the area known as Palestine was controlled by an Arab power was around 635 AD. The rest of the time has been a mix of Babylonians, Romans, the Ottoman empire, British, and, oh yeah, the Hebrews.

But hey, don't believe me:

"The only Arab domination since the Conquest in 635 A.D. hardly lasted, as such, 22 years...," the Muslim chairman of the Syrian Delegation attested in his remarks to the Paris Peace Conference in February 1919.

"Yes, the existence of a separate Palestinian identity serves only tactical purposes. The founding of a Palestinian state is a new tool in the continuing battle against Israel... " Zuheir Muhsin, late Military Department head of the PLO and member of its Executive Council, Dutch daily Trouw, March 1977

AM YISRAEL CHAI! And shabbat shalom!

7. What happened in 635 AD
I did not know that there was ever any autonomous arab rule. Was that as an emirate of the Ottoman Turk empire?

A good historical overview of Palestine can be found here:-

As you can see, the area of Palestine was in the control of the Fatimid dynasty (an Arab caliphate) until about 1040 or so, and pockets of it remained under their control for quite a bit longer. Its also worth noting that the "second Kingdom of Israel" (the Hasmonean kingdom) was quite short in comparison. The so called "first kingdom of Israel" is archaeologically not very well attested, and it seems likely that the ancient Hebrews were a small group living amongst a much larger whole of Philistines, Canaanites, Assyrians and Akkadians.

There has been a distinct Palestinian identity since the early twentieth century, and indeed Jewish refugees settling in Palestine referred to the indigenous population as Palestinians.

6. Yeah, just like Israel controls Gaza now
How many rockets were fired at Israeli towns out of the Strip today, by the way?

4. A Reasoned, rationale response
Abbas should not short-circuit the peace process. It is time for Abbas to return to the negotiating table.
