Israel's wall nears monastery; protest turns violent

Bethlehem – Ma'an – Three journalists were among eight injured on Sunday in the town of Beit Jala as locals and internationals gathered to protest the continued construction of Israel's separation wall.

Border guards at the site, near the 18th century Cremisan winery, beat protesters with batons, and fired sound bombs, tear-gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets, witnesses said.

Head of the local committee against Israeli land confiscations, Imad Abu Nassar, said protesters gathered at the back roads of the vineyard and walked toward the site where Israeli bulldozers were preparing the earth for the construction of the wall.

Eight were badly beaten, including Yousef Shahin with Palmedia, AbdelHafith Hashlamon with the European News Agency, and Najeh Hashlamon who was taking photos for ABA.
