Abbas cracks down on settlement work
Abbas cracks down on settlement work

Tuesday 27 April 2010

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has signed a law banning Palestinians from working in Israel's illegal settlements and selling goods produced in them.

Violators facing up to five years in prison and stiff fines.

The law signed on Monday marks the Palestinians' most determined campaign against the colonies that Israel has built on lands that have been earmarked by the international community for the future state of Palestine.

Palestinians vehemently oppose the settlements but many rely on them for work.

Nearly half a million Israelis live on annexed Palestinian land, including nearly 300,000 Israelis in more than 120 settlements in the West Bank.
