The Jerusalem stabbing of an Arab man by a Jewish teenager was nationalistically motivated, police sources said on Friday, also revealing that the 16-year-old had already been involved in numerous past incidents of anti-Arab violence.
On Thursday, Jerusalem police arrested the teenager on suspicion that he had stabbed a 42-year-old Arab man in the stomach earlier in the day at Levi Eshkol street on the city's northeast side.
The 16-year-old boy turned himself in, telling police that he had acted in self defense after the man attacked him.
A Jerusalem magistrate's court remanded the teenager by five days.
The Arab man was hospitalized in moderate condition after sustaining numerous wounds to his stomach following the stabbing. The suspect fled the scene immediately following the event.
"Questioning of the victim has revealed that the assailant was a yarmulke-wearing Jew, and had no prior relationship with the victim," said a police official. According to the victim, the assailant just approached him, stabbed him once, and fled.
Police sources said the teenager was involved in numerous assaults against Arabs, including an attack in East Jerusalem's Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, as well as hurling rocks near Carmel, south of Hebron and near the settlement Yitzhar.
