Jordan to Israel: Don't let Jews onto Temple Mount
The United States and Jordan are trying to ease the tensions surrounding the Temple Mount area in Jerusalem, with Jordan asking Israel to prevent the entry of Jews and tourists to the site until the situation calms down, sources close to the situation told Haaretz.

Confrontations continued yesterday between Palestinian demonstrators and security forces. One Israeli soldier was stabbed and the number of people detained since the latest disturbances began reached 50.

Since 2003 the Israel Police has allowed free access to the Temple Mount to Jews and tourists from 7:30 to 10 A.M. and from 12:30 to 1:30 P.M., via the Mugrabi Gate.

<snip>

Hatem Abdel Qader, PA adviser on Jerusalem affairs, who was arrested on suspicion of incitement three days ago and later released, approves of such an agreement. He says Israel's unilateral decision to let non-Muslims enter the Temple Mount offends Muslim worshipers because the women among the former often dress inappropriately.

1. This is one case in which I which the I/P rules had allowed a different headline
for this story instead of the one used in the original article.

The first sentence in the excerpt of the article clearly shows that Jordan made it's request in order to protect Jewish people and visitors from harm-Not out of a desire to make the Temple Mount area Judenrein.

The original headline is unnecessarily inflammatory.

5. I don't see anything in that sentence
indicating a desire to protect Jews and/or tourists - more likely, the requested this to prevent further riots (as I recall, at least one round of rioting started because Arabs on the Mount started attacking tourists).

4. Police in renewed standoff with Al-Aqsa protesters
Israeli security forces reportedly surrounded and threatened to storm the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem on Monday evening in an ongoing standoff with demonstrators inside the holy site.

Around 200 Palestinians have holed up inside the Mosque and have refused Israeli authorities demands to leave the area, according to Sheikh Ali Shekha, a leader in the Islamic Movement from inside Israel, who spoke to Ma’an on the phone from inside the compound.

Shekha said that an Israeli raid on Al-Aqsa would result in a “massacre” of the worshipers inside.

Protests flared again on Monday night after Israeli forces arrested a teenager from Shufat Refugee Camp, north of Jerusalem, for allegedly stabbing a soldier with a knife. According to Reuters, Palestinian teens burned cardboard cartons in the streets and pelted Israeli troops with stones. The same report stated that clashes spread to the outskirts of Ramallah, where some 50 teenagers also hurled rocks at Israeli forces.

Meanwhile Israeli police announced that restrictions on entry to Al-Aqsa will continue on Tuesday. Only Muslim men over the age of 50 will be allowed to enter, provided they hold an Israeli ID card. Muslim women of all ages will also be allowed.
