South Africa Urged to Prosecute Soldiers Over Gaza, SAPA Says

"South African prosecutors are considering a request to bring charges against South Africans who took part in Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip earlier this year, the South African Press Association said.

The country’s National Prosecuting Authority is studying an affidavit seeking an investigation into about 70 South Africans who served in the Israeli army during the Gaza hostilities, SAPA said, citing Mthunzi Mhaga, a spokesman for the authority.

The request, filed by the Palestinian Solidarity Alliance and the Media Review Network, cites allegations that the South Africans were involved in war crimes committed by the Israeli army against Palestinians in Gaza, SAPA said.

The two organizations have also filed a separate affidavit demanding the immediate arrest of a South African-born Israeli soldier who is currently in the country to attend a conference, SAPA said."
