an. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Police in the West Bank town of Ramallah wear camouflage fatigues and carry M-16 rifles as they walk the streets on high alert -- against other Palestinians.
They are being deployed by the Palestinian Authority to mute public protests against Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 575 Palestinians.
If there is a non-combatant loser in the wake of Israel’s two-week old air, land and sea assault, it is PA President Mahmoud Abbas, 73, who lost control of Gaza in 2007 to Hamas, the Islamic party battling Israel.
Now overseeing 2 million people from Ramallah, Abbas faces the delicate balancing act of maintaining a stance against Israel while standing to profit should he regain Gaza through Israel’s military intervention.
