World protests at Gaza conflict
World protests at Gaza conflict

Page last updated at 15:22 GMT, Saturday, 3 January 2009

Mass demonstrations are being held around the world in protest at Israel's military offensive against Hamas, as the campaign enters its second week.

Rallies are being held in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens and several Asian cities, following similar events in parts of the Muslim world on Friday.

Earlier, tens of thousands of Israeli Arabs called for an end to the bombing campaign at a rally in northern Israel.

In central London, protesters - including the singer Annie Lennox and former mayor Ken Livingstone - marched along the Embankment to Trafalgar Square. Some chanted "Free, free Palestine" and "Israel terrorists".

Many stopped en route to throw hundreds of shoes at the gates of Downing Street, echoing the protest of an Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush last month.

Lyndsey German, of the Stop the War Coalition, said the protest was "just the start of the campaign".

Let's see how the "world" reacts when those pesky, irritating firecrackers that are hurling over Israel's borders start flying within their own borders someday soon. Let's see how "restrained" they want their govt's to be in response when they and their kids are the targets of religious fanatics.

Let's see them have the same impossible standard for their own govt's as they do for Israel.

When these religious, fanatic nutjobs see how "restrained" the world wishes Israel and the West to be, it won't be long before they set their sights elsewhere - to wage war for "political" reasons and expect next to nothing in consequences for their actions. Hell, why shouldn't they "fire away" elsewhere? There's hardly any price for them to pay under such impossible standards.

2. If Israelis really wanted to please the world
they would all commit suicide. Guess that won't happen. Oh well, can't please everybody.

3. Altho it sure seems that way sometimes, these paltry
demos are just that, paltry. The world at large is probably relieved that Israel gets once again to be the bad cop against terrorists. Notice none of their "brothers," are coming to their aid to any real extent. They remember how they got repaid in the past by the "Palestinian resistance."
