Venezuelan President Shocked by US Reaction to Israeli Attacks on Gaza
Venezuelan President Shocked by US Reaction to Israeli Attacks on Gaza

Sunday, December 28, 108

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has questioned the United States' reaction to Israeli attacks on Gaza, calling Washington's response 'shocking.'

Israel's Saturday bombardment of Gaza left at least 230 dead and 800 wounded, making it the biggest such atrocity in 60 years of Israel-Palestine conflict.

Condemning Israel for its air raids on the tiny coastal region, Chavez said “The US is the only government compliant in the attacks.”

The remark came after Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the US National Security Council, criticized the Hamas, saying Tel Aviv was defending its people.

Chavez described the Israeli raids as a “criminal” act which is meant to “annihilate the hope of life for an entire people,” AP reported.

He called for a “massive campaign of repudiation'' of Israeli atrocities.

10. Chavez is the spiritual successor to Fidel and Che
It is important to align yourself with the defenseless and the oppressed, particularly when they are under imperialist aggression, as the Gazans are.

7. I'm on the link - there is no "about us" page or anything that I can find there
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 10:58 PM by oberliner
Can you provide any more information about the site?

On the bottom of the page it identifies itself as "Iranian Quran News Agency" - that's why I thought it might be run by the Iranian government.

In any case, I've never seen anyone link to this site as a source before and I am curious to know more about them.

It seems like a far-right religious site, like maybe something akin to the Christian Broadcast Network in the US?

Any information you could provide would be appreciated.

9. Perfect - thank you!
Doesn't seem like your kind of site considering the views on religion you've expressed on this board.

Analyzing the news with a Quranic approach?

Here it is: http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=79720§ionid=351020202

I don't see where Chavez expresses any "shock", do you?

Also, here's an AP story that has reaction from Chavez to the Gaza attack.

And it's in English!

Venezuela rejects Israel's attacks on Gaza

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — President Hugo Chavez says Venezuela condemns Israel for its attacks on Hamas-ruled Gaza.

Israel bombed key security installations Saturday, leaving more than 200 Palestinians dead and more than 400 wounded. Palestinian officials say at least 15 civilians were among the dead.

The Israeli army says Palestinian militants have fired 300 rockets and mortars at Israeli targets over the past week.

But Chavez on Saturday called Israel's retaliation "criminal" and urged a "massive campaign of repudiation."

He says the U.S. is the only government compliant with the attacks. U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe had criticized the Hamas attacks and said Israel was defending its people.

Looks like the Iranian News Agency came up with the "shocked" part.

14. El Universal: Government indignant over Israel's criminal attack on Gaza
Edited on Sun Dec-28-08 11:27 PM by IndianaGreen

I call your attention to the third paragraph and what it says about US "seal of approval" to Israel's criminal attack.

On edit:

Same story, different newspaper.

16. I'm still not seeing where Chavez expressed shock at the US reaction
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the third paragraph with the "seal of approval" reference is not quoting Chavez.

In any case, the emotion expressed in that paragraph does not seem to be shock at the US reaction, does it?

18. I just think the Iranian Press but an inaccurate headline on the story
"Chavez Angry at US Reaction to Gaza Attack" would have made a lot more sense to me.

If Chavez was indeed shocked by the US reaction then that doesn't speak very well about his understanding of the current US administration.
