"A truce between Israel and Hamas militants who rule Gaza took effect at 6 a.m. Thursday and appeared to be holding a few hours later.
Under the agreement, Gaza's Hamas leaders agreed to stop attacks from all Palestinian militants, and in return, Israel would halt raids inside Gaza and and gradually ease its economic blockade if the truce holds.
Two hours after the truce took effect, Israel partially lifted its economic blockade and allowed fuel to be transported in.
If the quiet holds for a week, Israel will ease its restrictions on supplies further.
"There are no militants on the streets. We don't even see any policemen," said journalist Talal Abu-Rahmi. "It's been quiet."
