Report: U.S. opposes Israel's plan for Jordan Valley fence
The United States seriously opposes Israel's intention to build a fence separating the Jordan Valley from Palestinian land, Army Radio quoted an American official as saying Monday.

The official was quoted as reiterating U.S. opposition to the fence in general and specifically the eastern route of the fence, near the Jordan Valley, which he said would effectively imprison Palestinians between a fence to the east and a fence to the west.

<snip>

In addition, the Knesset will meet Monday afternoon on evacuating outposts and settlements, and will vote on an announcement that Sharon is expected to make.

The fence, which the Palestinians diligently call the wall, is a good example, they say, of how the Americans can be persuaded when they
do listen. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was briefed on the fence by Stephanie Koury, a member of the Palestinian
negotiations support unit. She explained how the fence was taking thousands of dunams away from Palestinians and creating more
damage to the economy of the West Bank.

1. "Fence?"
> The fence, which the Palestinians diligently call the wall...

Notice that this is the only phrase that uses the term "wall." In every other reference, they try to minimize the thing by repeatedly referring to it as a "fence," as if it's just a small thing like you'd find in your back yard.

Any rational person would call it a wall. It is, in fact, exactly like a prison wall, or the Berlin wall. It's the same delusional thinking that permeates the right-wing here and in Israel. Keep the godless heathens at bay with your prison wall.

2. Fences and walls
For the record, the previous border fence -- the one separating Israel with Jordan -- was a massive, multi-layered endeavor with lots of armed guards. Not exactly what I'd have in my backyard either, unless some of my neighbors wanted to blow themselves up and try and kill me and mine.

4. That has nothing to do...
with a wall between Jordan and the West Bank.

What justifiable reason is there to place an Israeli prison wall along a border between Jordan and the West Bank?

8. Don't you get it?
This will be the Palestinian's "liberation", a great big prison yard where Israeli guards wait to pick them off from guard towers.

3. LOL
That and fifty cents won't even buy you a donut at Dunkin' Donuts.

The U.S, has it within its power to stop this, but all it does is engage in handwringing. One call to Sharon threatening to cut aid to Israel would do the trick. But the U.S. would rather just act as if it were powerless to change the situation. "Oh dear me. Isn't this terrible."

5. The U.S. "Opposes" in a special sense
All the while continuing to prop up Israel's economy and pour in $$$ billions. I rather think a quick "nope, don't like this, back off" from the WH would in itself stop this wall from being built. So, as usual the fake public opposition is contradicted by actual private support.
