Dahlan calls for 'urgent American intervention' on road map
Palestinian Security Affairs Minister Mohammed
Dahlan on Sunday criticized a meeting between
Prime Ministers Ariel Sharon and Mahmoud
Abbas
earlier in day, calling for the Washington to
intercede or face the collapse the U.S.-backed
road map to Middle East peace.

The meeting, the first between
Sharon and Abbas since July 1,
kicked off 10 days of
international diplomacy aimed
at solidifying the fragile
cease-fire and advancing the
road map.

"The atmosphere at the meeting
demands urgent American
intervention in order to prevent the collapse
of the road map efforts, and to pressure Israel
to meet its commitments," said Dhalan, who had
accompanied Abbas to the two-hour meeting at
Sharon's Jerusalem residence.

He accused Israel of using old tactics of
dictating to the Palestinians, "and we totally
reject this."
