Sunday Times: Mission Iran, "Israel will not tolerate Iran going nuclear..."

"Israel will not tolerate Iran going nuclear and military sources say it will use tactical strikes unless Iran abandons its programme. Is Israel bluffing or might it really push the button? Uzi Mahnaimi in New York and Sarah Baxter in Washington report

In an Israeli air force bunker in Tel Aviv, near the concert hall for the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, Major General Eliezer Shkedi might one day conduct operations of a perilous kind. Should the order come from the Israeli prime minister, it will be Shkedi’s job as air force commander to orchestrate a tactical nuclear strike on Iran.

Two fast assault squadrons based in the Negev desert and in Tel Nof, south of Tel Aviv, are already training for the attack.

On a plasma screen, Shkedi will be able to see dozens of planes advance towards Iran, as well as the electronic warfare aircraft jamming the Iranian and Syrian air defences and the rescue choppers hovering near the border, ready to move in and pluck out the pilots should the mission go wrong."

3. Oh come on! Israel has always had nukes, they NEVER said they didn't...
and your just spewing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic hate!

:sarcasm:

Well, that's a quick turn around. Last year at this time, Israel had no nukes, today their pilots actively talk about them. Oh and what about those who said Israel did have nukes, the ones who were charged with treason, what ever happened to them?

5. HypnoToad, the fallout might in fact be worse...
because the soil underground will be vaporized and then it will shoot up into the atmosphere like a blank in a gun. This is simple physics. Unless that shaft they plan on creating closes up during the nuclear explosion, they are going to defy basic science, which has been studied for hundreds of years.

Like I said, it's like a gun. Only in this case, inside the gun there is no gunpowder, there is a nuke. The nuke will vaporize the soil and eject it high into the atmosphere, and this shit will rain down on people in countries down wind of Iran. If it goes high enough into the atmosphere it may even hit the US.

This is probably one of the dumbest fucking ideas I have ever heard of in my life. The people will not only fuck over the environment, but also will enrage 1 billion Muslims worldwide. Israel will die, and we may as well, if this happens.

9. OK. Clearly *someone* wants this story out there...
Currently, Iran has thumbed their nose at a US sponsored UN Security Council demand that they stop enriching uranium. China is now talking to Iran to try to get them to change their mind.

Looks like a psyops game to me at this point. But, in a few weeks, who knows....

Israel does know that they'll suffer the effects too, right? Iran knows that little bit of information, even if Israel is pretending to ignore it.

13. Oh yes, I fully expect Israel will be wiped off the map...
What would you do to a nation which did this to us? I'd want the same thing for whatever nation attacked us, just in the same way the Iranians and the various countries in the ME will take out Israel, if they do this.

16. They won't do this, they can't.
Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 08:52 PM by Lone_Star_Dem
I mean, sure they could, but the hostile reactions against them if they did would not be limited to the ME, the majority of the world would not welcome such an action.

The question is why say this in the first place? I think the goal is to further inflame the situation with Iran in an attempt to push them into making a wrong move.

15. An Israeli strike on Iran would mean America gets blamed for the attack.
The shortest route between Israel and Iran is through Iraqi airspace. That's airspace the US currently controls.

An attack on Iran by Israel, therefore, implies American tacit support for the attack.

Iran's government is not dumb. They know this. We know this. The Israelis know this. The second the fighting starts, Iran will sink US merchant ships and oil tankers in the Persian Gulf and Hormuz Strait during retaliation.

17. No, they are planning to go over Syria.
I think it's specifically for that reason too.

But the second point you made is totally correct. We will get blamed just like Iran was blamed for the Hezbollah-Lebanon war.

19. It doesn't matter if they cross Syria or Jordan, they still must fly through Iraqi airspace.
The Syrian protocol in the plan is just in case Syria invokes the mutual defense treaty with Iran and tries to cut off the airspace behind advancing Israeli warplanes.

Below is from William Clark off a pdf file. I do not know how to link pdf files so if it need be deleted let me know. there are old ads of The Shah with his picture and in big letters "Guess Who's Building Nuclear Power Plants" next to his image followed by a short tale of Iran building nukes. At the bottom it says "Nuclear energy. Today's answer." This ad was put out by the US Energy Department. I'd copy and paste it but I don't know how of pdf files.

______________________________________________________________________________________________
Under the NPT, all Iran is required to do is allow inspections of its nuclear facilities to ensure that no weapons-grade nuclear material is being produced. Any further demands expressed by the US and the UK via the UN are related to geopolitics and are not surprisingly, being rejected by Iran. Just as is the case with Iraq, the US and UK military-industrial-petroleum-banking conglomerate have economic and strategic interests at stake and are attempting to manipulate the UN Security Council in an effort to pursue an agenda that is mostly hidden from the American and British people, and from other UN members. Despite the ongoing obfuscation, the three important issues to consider concerning this largely manufactured “crisis” are as follows: 1) Despite three years of inspections by the IAEA, no factual evidence that Iran is developing a clandestine nuclear weapons program has ever been uncovered. In addition, a classified CIA assessment from 2006 described by reporter Seymour Hersh also found “no conclusive evidence...of a secret Iranian nuclear-weapons program.” <60> 2) According to the NPT, Iran and any other signatory nation has an “unalienable right” to nuclear technology, including the enrichment process. In 2003 two small uranium samples were found by the IAEA that were enriched to 36 percent (these samples are well above the 4 to 5 percent purity needed for nuclear power, but far below the 90 percent purity required for nuclear weapons). <61> Following this discovery and subsequent investigation period, Iran agreed to suspend enrichment and to the voluntary aspects of the Additional Protocol. After it was determined that the enriched uranium samples found in Iran originated from a discarded Pakistani-sourced centrifuge, Iran considered the IAEA investigation complete and re-started its small enrichment program. Iran remains in compliance with the NPT, despite US media reporting to the contrary. 3) Even if Iran sought to build nuclear bombs, and a clandestine weapons project was initiated in secrecy, the consensus of the US intelligence agencies as outlined in the 2005 National Intelligence Estimate is that Iran could not make enough highly enriched uranium (HEU) fissile material for a bomb until the middle of the next decade (2015). <62> This is likely due to the fact that Iran’s uranium ore is contaminated with molybdenum, a heavy metal that must be removed for HEU production, lest the molybdenum will crash the uranium enrichment cascades. <63> Reportedly only a few advanced nuclear powers, such as the US, Russia, and China have the infrastructure to undertake this process.

Of course another fact missing from the debate over Tehran’s long-standing desire to develop nuclear energy is that Iranian oil production peaked in 1974. In fact, in August 1974 the late Shah of Iran envisioned a time when the world’s oil supply would run out, and declared: “Petroleum is a noble material, much too valuable to burn...We envision producing as soon as possible, 23,000 megawatts of electricity using nuclear plants.” <65> (see U.S. nuclear energy advertisement from the mid-1970s). Realizing that Iran’s oil supply was finite and that maintaining the standard of living of its people would require the construction of nuclear power plants, the Shah asked Washington if US companies could assist Iran in building 20 nuclear power plants by the year 2000. Ironically, a couple of young men in the Ford administration, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld, formally approved Iran’s plans — including full domestic enrichment of Iran’s large uranium ore deposits. Thus, Iran’s nuclear program began 30 years ago under the autocratic dictatorship of the Shah, which had the full blessing of the Ford administration.

Israel denies plan to hit Iran enrichment plant with tactical nukes
By Haaretz Service and Agencies

The Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem denied Sunday a report in the British media that Israel has drawn up secret plans to destroy Iran's uranium enrichment facilities with conventional and tactical nuclear weapons.

Citing what it said were several Israel Defense Forces sources, the British newspaper The Sunday Times said two Israel Air Force squadrons had been training to blow up an enrichment plant in Natanz using low-yield nuclear "bunker busters."

Two other sites, a heavy water plant at Arak and a uranium conversion plant at Isfahan, would be targeted with conventional bombs, the Sunday Times said.

But Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said that Israel wanted the issue of Iran's nuclear program resolved through diplomacy.
