Europe’s Muslims face rising ‘Islamophobia,’ says report

VIENNA, Austria — A German Muslim says his neighbours suspect he is making weapons inside his mosque. An Austrian believer complains that some dog owners set their pets on her when they pass her on the sidewalk.

Such acts of "Islamophobia" are on the rise across Europe, where many Muslims are menaced and misunderstood — some on a daily basis — the European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia warned earlier this month in a new report. The Vienna-based centre, which tracks ethnic and religious bias across the 25-country EU, said Muslims routinely suffer acts ranging from physical attacks to discrimination in the job and housing markets.

It called on leaders to strengthen policies on integration, and on Muslims to "engage more actively in public life" to counter negative perceptions driven by terrorism or violence, such as this year’s backlash to cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

1. It's not ok for Muslims to be in Europe, but it was ok for European
countries to colonize Muslim nations like Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, etc.

2. They needed a study for that?
I've been at dinner tables with very well-educated and otherwise liberal Europeans where one would say something like "what really worries me is ISLAM."

3. Did you see this story?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070106/ap_on_re_eu/france_pork_soup_1

PARIS - A top French judge ruled that an extreme-right group cannot serve pork soup to the needy, saying the charitable handouts aim to discriminate against Muslims and Jews who don't eat pork because of their faith.

Judge Christian Vigouroux of the Council of State, the country's highest administrative body, said late Friday that such giveaways by the far-right group Solidarity of the French threaten public order.

His ruling approved a decision by Paris police to refuse permits to the group on the grounds that such handouts could spark angry reactions.

France is home to more than 5 million Muslims and some 600,000 Jews. Both Islam and Judaism prohibit eating pork, and Vigouroux said the group had shown "a clearly discriminatory goal" with its charity.

4. Yeah, I saw that story posted in LBN...
What surprised me was an earlier court decision that said they could do it. I'm glad the later decision reversed that, because imo it was intended to be discriminatory and if they'd been allowed to do it they may as well have stuck up a sign saying 'No Muslims or Jews welcome at this soup kitchen!'
