Palestinian Militants Abduct, Beat Jenin Governor
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20030719/wl_nm/mideast_abduction_dc_5

Masked Palestinians abducted the governor of the West Bank city of Jenin on Saturday and beat him in public after he tried to crack down on their militant group, witnesses said.

The abduction highlighted the problems facing Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas as he tries to rein in militants to bolster efforts to implement a U.S.-backed "road map" to peace.

A local leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which has links to President Yasser Arafat (news - web sites)'s Fatah (news - web sites) movement and is divided over whether to accept a truce halting attacks on Israelis, confirmed his group had abducted governor Haider Irsheid.

The masked men took Irsheid to a central square and beat him with their fists and kicked him, witnesses said. The militants then disappeared into the nearby Jenin refugee camp, a warren of narrow alleys where they can easily hide.

.........................................................

good ol' al-aqsa MURDERS brigade....i guess today they are
al-aqsa 'beat-the-shit-out-of-anyone-we-want' brigade

and in jenin , no less....lets send in a UN fact finding
group.

1. Your story shows very well
It is vital to disband these groups. There just cannot be peace until it happens.

2. Interesting that they did not kill him.
Not the most enlightened form of debate, to be sure.

5. Collaborators are usually hung
This man had luck to escape the noose. He was trying to bring about reform, in light of the new reality. Arafat is under pressure from Mubarak to maintain the hudna.

It is well known that Egypt's debt to the US (receives an aid package similar to Israel's since Camp David I)has been forgiven. Despite constant claims to the contrary, Israel is struggling to repay the accumulated debt to the US. Israel receives about half the foreign aid as a grant, the other half as a loan.

Mubarak is trying to assist in drawing the conflict ot a close. This regional pressure does seems to be effective. Hopefully, this role will continue

9. The world...
The world that seems dedicated to the proposition that all Palestinian terrorists want peace.
