IDF forces kill Palestinian civilian in Jenin
Aug. 28, 2006 16:29

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

IDF troops shot and killed an apparently unarmed Palestinian civilian in the West Bank city of Jenin, the army and witnesses said Monday.

Sabri Halil, 64, was shot late Sunday night by Israeli troops on patrol in the city.

Witnesses said he was a local guard at a school and was shot in the heart after he aimed his flashlight at a passing car. He died on the spot.

The army said its forces noticed a man on a rooftop holding what looked like a weapon when they opened fire at him. The army said the man probably was holding a flashlight and it launched in investigation into the incident.

1. I hope there is more to the story than this.
From the article, they certainly seemed a little quick to pull the trigger. But then when there are no repercussions, why wouldn't they?

2. It sounds like there isn't.
It's another instance of 'force protection' taken to extreme levels, soldiers see a silhoulette or
flashlight directed at them, & shoot said silhoulette.

On Sunday, IDF troops killed a 64-year-old man in Jenin, it was released for publication Monday.

Palestinian sources said on Monday that Sabri Khalil worked as a night watchman at a local school. After he shined his flashlight on a passing car, soldiers patrolling the city shot him in the chest, killing him.

The IDF confirmed that soldiers shot a Palestinian standing on a rooftop, saying he had apparently been holding a weapon at the time. An army spokesman said that in retrospect, it appears that the man was holding a flashlight.

The army is investigating the incident.
