Gaza's darkness
<snip>

"Gaza has been reoccupied. The world must know this and Israelis must know it, too. It is in its worst condition, ever. Since the abduction of Gilad Shalit, and more so since the outbreak of the Lebanon war, the Israel Defense Forces has been rampaging through Gaza - there's no other word to describe it - killing and demolishing, bombing and shelling, indiscriminately.

Nobody thinks about setting up a commission of inquiry; the issue isn't even on the agenda. Nobody asks why it is being done and who decided to do it. But under the cover of the darkness of the Lebanon war, the IDF returned to its old practices in Gaza as if there had been no disengagement. So it must be said forthrightly, the disengagement is dead. Aside from the settlements that remain piles of rubble, nothing is left of the disengagement and its promises. How contemptible all the sublime and nonsensical talk about "the end of the occupation" and "partitioning the land" now appears. Gaza is occupied, and with greater brutality than before. The fact that it is more convenient for the occupier to control it from outside has nothing to do with the intolerable living conditions of the occupied.

In large parts of Gaza nowadays, there is no electricity. Israel bombed the only power station in Gaza, and more than half the electricity supply will be cut off for at least another year. There's hardly any water. Since there is no electricity, supplying homes with water is nearly impossible. Gaza is filthier and smellier than ever: Because of the embargo Israel and the world have imposed on the elected authority, no salaries are being paid and the street cleaners have been on strike for the past few weeks. Piles of garbage and obnoxious clouds of stink strangle the coastal strip, turning it into Calcutta.

More than ever, Gaza is also like a prison. The Erez crossing is empty, the Karni crossing has been open only a few days over the last two months, and the same is true for the Rafah crossing. Some 15,000 people waited for two months to enter Egypt, some are still waiting, including many ailing and wounded people. Another 5,000 waited on the other side to return to their homes. Some died during the wait. One must see the scenes at Rafah to understand how profound a human tragedy is taking place. A crossing that was not supposed to have an Israeli presence continues to be Israel's means to pressure 1.5 million inhabitants. This is disgraceful and shocking collective punishment. The U.S. and Europe, whose police are at the Rafah crossing, also bear responsibility for the situation."

1. We need more talk about the human side of this tragedy.
Not everyone is Gaza is responsible for the violence yet they are being collectively punished.

But it is the hands of Hamas who hold the Palestinians' fate - not Israel's.

"It breaks my heart to read about the plight of the Palestinians at the hands of Israel."

That was the blame game in action.

I was just challenging his move.

10. Neocon nonsense.
It's the occupiers who are liquidating Palestine, & Palestinians, but, hey, you already knew that.
Anything Hamas does at this point would scarcely make a difference to the ongoing horror.

Be honest - how much of this Haaretz article did you actually read?

4. ‘Palestinians face unprecedented recession’
<snip>

"Palestinian economy faces an ‘unprecedented economic recession’ as Israel tightens restriction on the movement of people and goods in Gaza and the West Bank, the World Bank said.

The clampdown, together with the suspension of foreign aid and Israeli transfers of tax collections to the Palestinian Authority, may cause real incomes to contract by at least a third this year and push two thirds of the Palestinian population into poverty, the World Bank said in an e-mailed report on Sunday.

Israel has made it more difficult for goods and people to cross in and out of the Gaza Strip and inside the West Bank since Hamas, designated a terrorist group by the US and the European Union, won Palestinian parliamentary elections last January. Israel has been engaged in daily military operations in Gaza for the past two months after militants kidnapped a soldier.

‘‘In today’s environment of confrontation and heightened risks, movement and access remains severely constrained and several earlier improvements have been reversed,’’ the report said. ‘‘Israeli facilitation of Palestinian economic recovery is key to the achievement of sustainable Israeli security.’’

9. Human rights group: Contempt for human life in Gaza
Physicians for Human Rights link dire medical services in Gaza to closure of border crossings into Gaza

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3299167,00.html

"Members of the Physicians for Human Rights organization deplored on Sunday the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip where they visited a number of hospitals and met with Palestinian Health Minister Dr Basim Naeem of Hamas.

Prof. Tzvi Bentwich of the group said he was impressed by the interest among members of the Palestinian medical services in cooperating with Israel to improve the situation in Gaza. "There are people on the other side who want contact with Israelis and they speak of the necessity to have relations with Israel. The Palestinian health minister in the Hamas government, despite things he said as a politician, was determined and clear regarding the need for professional cooperation in the medical field," Bentwich said.

Bentwich said tight security measures imposed by the Israel Defense Forces at border crossings is stymieing efforts to replenish drugs stocks in Gaza hospitals and preventing patients from receiving necessary treatment.

"On this matter there is total contempt for human life, even if the Palestinians are being forced to get used to the fact that citizens are dying because of shortages in drugs and treatment, or inappropriate treatment," he added.

Bentwich accused the Israeli government's actions fall short of its claims that its policy is to alleviate the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza."
