Prominent US Senator Calls for Resolution of Shebaa Farms Dispute
Prominent US Senator Calls for Resolution of Shebaa Farms Dispute

By Paula Wolfson
Washington
20 August 2006

Feinstein - a California Democrat - says an agreement on the fate of Shebaa Farms is crucial. She spoke on CNN's Late Edition program.

"I think deciding that really does take away one of the main organizing tools of Hezbollah, which has made the claim that parts of Lebanon are occupied, and one of those parts is Shebaa Farms," she said.

Earlier, Lebanese Justice Minister Charles Rizk told CNN an Israeli withdrawal from Shebaa Farms is envisioned as part of a permanent end to hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

"And this ceasefire would be based on some points and one of these points is the evacuation of Shebaa Farms," said Charles Rizk.

1. Feinstein makes sense? Pigs fly? Blue moon?
My my, will wonders never cease. Yes that would help defuse the entire situation. Bloody unlikely to happen though.

2. Help defuse the entire situation? Listen, I've got this bridge ...
The UN had already decided, Shebaa farms are Syrian territory - and Israel withdrew completely from Lebanon. That's how the situation stood for a decade, without objections from Lebanon or Syria ... until Hezbollah's "stunt" (not my term, it's reportedly how the Lebanese consider it).

3. oh my...is that why hezballa has taken over s. beirut again?
because of the sheba farms which syrian has never formally given to lebanon?...that the UN has declared that they are Syrian?.....its the ability to dupe so many people when a quick google finds the answers.....and thats why wonders never cease.

5. Keep the hate baby, keep the hate.
Yes the Sheba farms region is a source of conflict and yes resolving it would help defuse the situation. That of course does not mean that then the situation would be entirely defused. It would help, it is not sufficient. It is clearly not Israeli territory, so why not settle this issue and take some wind out of Hezbollah's sails?

By the way, when exactly did Hezbollah give up control of the shiite sections of Beirut?

Oh and I don't think you really are in favor of applying all applicable UN resolutions to the region, are you? Just some of them, right?

6. how is the sheba farms a source of conflict?
Edited on Sun Aug-20-06 03:42 PM by pelsar
lebanon doesnt think so, Syrian doesnt, Israel doesnt......as far as i can tell a certain third party militia funded by fourth country has decided it

however, since you seem infavor of "non state players" making foreign policy, i assume you would have no problem if the KKK decided on their own version of the sheba farms?...or the mexican laborers with the CA/Mexican border. I'm sure they can find something to "be in dispute there). How about a resurrection of the baader meinhof gang, they too had some problems with the state they resided in...

Lebanon was supposed to take back not just S.Lebanon but the capital as well.

(I didnt even mention any UN resolutions...)

8. how so?
so Hizballa has more say in the borders than the states involved? in the UN?...The border has been agreed to by Lebanon, UN, Syria when israel pulled out. Is there another country on the border that doesnt show up on my maps?

9. Everyone agrees that Shebaa Farms do not belong to Israel
except for Israel, who somehow convinced itself that GAWD Almighty drew her borders.

Syria has not formally told the UN, nor filled out the paper work to give the Sheba farms to lebanon (doubt they ever will): And is the minor detail that the UN sanctioned the border irrelevant?

perhaps you can show me where they have? (one hears the contention a lot, but all i seem to hear is Hizballa and friends talking) so how about some proof?

The UN tried to peacefully dismantle the Shebaa Farms time bomb through the modalities of international law. It requested both the Lebanese and Syrian governments submit official documents signed by both countries clearly stating Syria's recognition of the Shebaa Farms as Lebanese land. However, Syria refused to comply with this request, and instead had its Foreign Minister Farouq Sharaa place an unofficial telephone call to the UN Secretary General Annan.

and thats why the shebaa farms still belong to syria (you can find variations of the fact that syria has never formally/offically given the land to Lebanon in the internet)...all it takes is a couple of forms to fill out.

______

your turn, wheres the proof that syria has relinqished its claim officially and not via some diplomat speach?

11. Where is your proof that it belongs to Israel?
Even Iraq had more of a claim against Kuwait. Israel must give up this infantile obsession about lands which do not belong to her, and walk away from them, unitarily if she must.

Sharon had the right idea, but he didn't go far enough, and he put his "separation wall" on the wrong property line.

12. the Sheba farms are Syrian....
Edited on Tue Aug-22-06 02:18 AM by pelsar
part of the golan heights.....or so the official syrian, UN, Israeli, Lebanon lines goes, along with all the maps of the area....which is why neither Syrian or Lebanon has officially ask the UN to change the border.

the only one who seems to have a problem with that is Hezballa and their backers...i provided a link which further explains...i believe now its your turn to show some kind of proof that the Syrian govt has given the Sheba farms to Lebanon.......

13. So why is Israel occupying the Shebaa Farms then?
The only squatters in this equation are the Israelis!
