Unstable Soldier Harasses Palestinians and Internationals
hebron is located in the southern west bank far from the israeli border. there have been very few reports of palestinian violence from herbon... though ive never heard any. all the same the israeli army has a HUGE presence in hebron. the settlers in hebron are very hostile and often violent toward palestinians.

this report below does not speak of all IDF soldiers, however there are soldiers like this in the IDF... and US army im sure as well.

----------------------------------

<snip>

The soldier had been going from being hyperactive and talking about his past history of doing “crystal, meth, cocaine, marijuana, alcohol…” to taking his helmet off and hanging his head with a blank stare on his face. The soldier had also offered me pizza several times, walking close to me with box open; he also asked if I wanted to drink vodka. He offered the same to other HRWs, who refused.

The soldier then became agitated and said that he hated all Arabs and wanted to shoot or kill them. He said that terrorists had killed his family when he was a small child, and that he spent many years before the military doing drugs. He went on to talk about doing methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana and alcohol, and said that when his family was killed, his brain was dead. He said that since joining the Israeli army he was a new man. He also commented that he had been in the Army for two years now. The soldier then moved the detained man, who appeared to be autistic, behind the door to the right of the checkpoint and said that he could go and beat the man if we wanted, and then asked us repeatedly if we wanted him to beat the man. The HRWs calmly replied, ‘No’.

<snip>

The unstable soldier became aggressive and from about ten feet away, he put his gun up and pointed it at an HRW’s head with the flashlight lit. The unstable soldier then took his gun and pulled it up over his head. He then took the barrel end in his hands and swung the butt of the gun at her head. The HRW ducked and four soldiers surrounded the unstable soldier and led him to the military jeep. The other soldiers had removed his gun, vest and helmet from him. He attempted to come up the hill, but was stopped; he then went yelling and screaming towards the checkpoint.

3. More proof (as if more were needed)...
...that psychos of all kinds can find a congenial home in armies and police forces worldwide. :eyes:

Of course, it should be remembered that Israel has more-or-less universal military service, so all types will wind up in uniform. Hopefully, the authorities will be able to spot and deal with lunatics like this before they do a great deal of harm.

But, personally, I'd be less concerned about one nutcase like that than about the systematic oppression carried out in a calm, routine way by "normal" members of the IDF. Like the "good boys" at the innumberable West Bank checkpoints who prevent sick Palestinians from getting to hospitals before they die of their illness, because they "have to follow procedures" and "can't be too careful when fighting terrorists."

6. B'ztelem: IDF violence in West Bank worsens during war in Lebanon
<snip>

"A study released by a human rights group on Monday reveals a sharp increase in the violence inflicted on Palestinians by the security forces during the war against Hezbollah.

According to the report of B'tzelem, the Information Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories, most violent incidents took place in or next to checkpoints, particularly in the northern West Bank. The report alleges the rise in violence is due to the stricter travel restrictions recently imposed on Palestinians.

The details of the incidents recorded indicate that IDF troops and Border Policemen humiliated and abused Palestinians seeking to pass through checkpoints. In six cases victims had to receive medical care as a result of the abuse.

B'tzelem has filed a complaint with the Military Advocate General and the police internal affairs department at the Justice Ministry, urging them to investigate those six incidents."
