Last Updated: Saturday, 19 August 2006, 04:55 GMT 05:55 UK

Israelis detain Hamas deputy PM

Israeli forces have seized Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister Nasser al-Shaer
in a raid on his home in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

He was held when troops burst into the house early on Saturday, his wife said.

The Israeli military confirmed the detention of Mr Shaer, who is a senior member
of the governing Hamas movement, which does not recognise Israel.

An unnamed Israeli army spokesman quoted by AFP news agency said the detention
was "part of our fight against the radical Hamas movement".

3. Why are you surprised?
Israel is the only Nation I know that can do this kind of stuff and then insist that they're the victim.....and the world buys it.

4. Ummmm wouldn't there be laws about not bursting into an elected
deputy PM's home? I guess not....forgot that there aren't any laws anywhere anymore, when Power and Might rule. Even here..

5. Not when that deputy PM leads a government . .
Edited on Sat Aug-19-06 01:57 PM by msmcghee
. . and represent a group that has pledged to destroy Israel and whose militias kidnap Israeli soldiers and kill them at border checkpoints and who fire rockets into Israel from Gaza that kill Israeli civilians and who send suicide bombers into israel that kill Israeli citizens.

What kind of insane world do you live in? If people want to declare war against peaceful neighbors - they should not complain when that war affects them personally.

7. Well, that depends on who is in the right.

If a government calls for the destruction of Israel and launches attacks to do that - then Israel has the right to defend herself. If that includes arresting every MP in that government then so be it.

I think that would be preferable to carpet bombing Gaza or cutting off all imports and exports. Don't you agree?

I think that when enough Hamas MP's get tired of cooling their heels in Israeli prisons they might decide that calling for the destruction of Israel wasn't such a smart idea. I think that when corrupt and cowardly terrorists who send their children of their poor supporters off to Israel with explosive belts actually have to suffer a little themselves - that they'll suddenly find a more charitable way to deal with Israel.

Actually, Israel has every right under international law to do whatever is necessary to prevent deadly attacks across her borders. Arresting those responsible is actually a rather mild way to deal with it. Those attacks on the other hand are definite violations of international law.

So, do you support international law or not?

8. you couldn't be more wrong.
Israel has absolutely no right to do whatever is necessary to do anything! They take that catch-all phrase and abuse it to make war crimes and aggression seem like defense. They can wrap it up or disguise it however they please - it doesn't change the facts.

All Israel has shown is that they can't be trusted to obey international law and not bastardize it to suit their needs.
