Israeli stabbed to death in Australia
Sydney - An Israeli was stabbed to death by a gang of men who jumped out of a car and cornered him outside a store in Sydney's Bondi Beach, a Jewish community spokesman said Sunday.

Jewish Board of Deputies chief executive Vic Alhadeff said that witnesses to the late Saturday attack told him the 36-year-old victim was an Israeli national. He was taken to hospital with multiple stab wounds, where he died.

'There was a carload of people who stopped, and they got out and they assaulted him pretty brutally, and some of them were hitting him with a pole or something, and there was multiple stabs,' Alhadeff said.

Bondi has a large Jewish community, and Alhadeff said the killing appeared to be related to the conflict in Lebanon.

2. "appeared to be related to the conflict in Lebanon."?
Nothing in the brief article had anything to shore up that hypothesis.

Maybe it was just an ecstasy deal gone wrong.

And why don't we ever hear about the huge Israeli connection to that?

1. yes, most of us know there is an israeli connection to ecstasy.
2. could it be the assailants were of arab ethnicity...ergo, the lebanon connection

9. Why don't you try reading the link I posted?
Shall I spell it out for you?

1. Random attacks with no motivation by gangs in Sydney happen fairly regularly. Nothing in either article suggests he was singled out coz he was Israeli...

2. I think we're all very aware of yr negative feelings towards Arabs, but what you have to understand is that there's many gangs in Sydney and many of them are from other ethnic groups. Some of the Chinese gangs are more violent and active than any others...

3. Read the article from the Sydney Morning Herald where Alhadeff is quoted as saying it's unlikely to have been connected to what's happening in Lebanon...

13. I am so sorry..
I read the article and must have missed the ethnic origin of those Aussies.

And I have never once posted anything about Israelis and ecstasy ("here you go again"), but I do know what I am talking about when it comes to the international drug scene.

As far as "a nasty underbelly", are you referring to me? I am one of the most liberal people you would ever meet. I am our town's official liaison with the world outside. Maybe you have missed the target on this one.

I just prefer to be served facts, not air.

Come on down/over, I will take you to lunch and show you the sights.

still on the waterfront in tib? those margaritas!

have you managed to keep those awful mcmansions out of the area? i live on the north shore of LI and they're all over the place....replacing beautiful colonials and ranches on acre plus properties. it changes the bucolic character of some of the towns.

21. Are you talking about Sam's?
Or Gyuama's?

No McMansions here, adriennui.
Not only do you have to make all manner of permit applications, but your plans must be approved by the Town Council and your neighbors.
Not just your immediate neighbors, but anyone who can even see any part of your house.

And every business in town must be independently owned. No franchises or chains of any sort. We have neither a gas station or a pharmacy.

Tiburon also has a vountary ban on transfats in restaurants.

I just love it here.
And my view is one of the best in Town. Not bad for a poor farmboy from Texas.
And I am not leaving.
As a matter of fact, I rarely get out of our little Town.
Not driving has its benefits.

8. He didn't even say that...
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported him as saying it's unlikely to have been related to what's happening in Lebanon. And given the credibility of smh and knowing myself that random attacks by gangs in Sydney aren't unusual, I'm inclined to go with what they report...

5. More detail from the Sydney Morning Herald...
And they've quoted Alhadeff as saying it's unlikely the killing is related to what's happening in Lebanon...

"Mr Alhadeff said members of the Jewish community called him last night with details of the incident.

"Word came back to us last night from people in the area who saw it and found out that the man was an Israeli," he said.

"There was a car load of people who stopped and they got out and they assaulted him pretty brutally and some of them were hitting him with a pole or something and there was multiple stabs."

He said the incident did not appear to be related to the conflict in Lebanon."

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/hunt-for-gang-over-deadly-bondi-stabbing/2006/08/06/1154802736025.html

Which would make sense, as random attacks by gangs happen far too frequently in Sydney...

17. Those ones do, but they're by far not the only ones...
Edited on Sat Aug-05-06 11:04 PM by Violet_Crumble
I've been mentioning random violent attacks by gangs for a reason, and when I'm feeling less lazy I might go and gather some links up. But off the top of my head I can remember that back in March a guy was randomly shot in a shopping centre. Another one not too far back is the guy who was out for a walk who was set upon and bashed by a gang while he was holding his baby which was only a few weeks old. From what I've read of this newest incident, there's nothing to suggest any of the attackers knew this guy was Israeli, and it's more likely a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time....

on edit: here's a link to something on ethnic gangs in Sydney. http://www.uts.edu.au/new/releases/2002/September/pdfs/e_section4.pdf

It mentions the sensationalism of the Australian media, and anyone who is unfortunate enough to see an episode of Today Tonight would go away thinking that these gangs rule Sydney and they're all of Middle Eastern ethnicity. That's not the case at all. When it comes to organised crime (which often goes hand in hand with gang activity), anyone wanting to focus on stuff related to Australians of Middle Eastern descent need to move their focus away from Sydney and further south where Middle Eastern organised crime groups have taken over operations from Italian groups when it comes to illicit tobacco, which involves hijackings and home invasions...
