Last Wednesday morning Rifat al-Kulab, commander of the Preventive Security forces in Khan Yunis, in the Gaza Strip, left home for work. He and his driver had traveled about 30 meters in their Skoda when they saw two Subaru sedans coming straight at them, one from the front and one from the back.
Shots were fired at the Skoda. Al-Kulab, 41, felt a blow to his leg and realized he had been shot. His driver maneuvered around the pincer move and the two managed to flee.
The two sedans crashed into each other. Their passengers, members of Hamas, had also shot each other in their haste, killing one of the assailants.
Al-Kulab was rushed to the Khan Yunis hospital, and many members of the Preventive Security forces arrived to secure the scene, fearing another attempt on his life: In another incident involving another Fatah official, Hamas followed up on the attack at the hospital.
