Peretz emerged from the Thursday morning meeting with the message that Knesset elections would take place between the end of February and end of March.

The two met in Tel Aviv to discuss a date for the next elections, a day after Sharon said he wants the ballot to be held as soon as possible, as he does not want "to waste time on a lengthy election campaign."

Peretz described the meeting with Sharon as "to the point," and said he told the prime minister that he would agree with any date he chose. Peretz had initially wanted elections on March 6, but said he would forgo that date as it is a memorial day for fallen soldiers.

"I will let him decide the date within the period of the end of February and the end of March," Peretz told reporters after the meeting. "Any date he decides is okay with me."
