I have a question....
This is more constitutional than anything else, because the Second Amendment doesn't specify arms at all. So my question is this: How do you feel about the regulations of Knives, Daggers, and Swords in this country?

I ask this for a very good reason, in certain areas of the country, certain bladed weapons are outright banned, like swords, while others like switchblades are also banned and illegal to posses. Another common law is the banning of two sided blades, i.e. daggers. There is also limitations on the length of blades, usually 4 inches max, etc.

I collect swords and daggers, mostly for artistic reasons, many are very beautiful, I also don't understand such regulations, I don't see a rash of nationwide killings by swords lately. :) To be honest, regulations for guns I believe should be reasonable only, like Background checks and registration at worst, with limitations placed on RPGs ;).

Actually my Irish sword, which is battle ready, is used for personal protection, since it requires some skill to use in close quarters, and if a criminal broke into my house, he would be sorely pressed, even if in possession of it.

1. Aren't the regulations concerned with
carrying them on one's person? Carrying knives with blades beyond a certain length has been regulated every since I can remember..I'm 62.

3. Not under federal law
AFAIK there are no federal restrictions on owning or carrying any kind of edged weapon.

There are laws restricting the manufacture and interstate sale of switchblades. See http://assembler.law.cornell.edu/uscode/ and search Title 15.

10. Interesting read on the Federal Switchblade Act.
http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/swbl-leg.txt

The horror of it all! Substitute "assault weapon" for "switchblade" and 1958 wasn't all that different from 1994... although some would probably argue that "Yeah, but Jimmy Dean didn't carry (or "need"), an "assault weapon".

2. I'm happy with California state laws on edged weapons
Edited on Thu Oct-21-04 02:51 PM by slackmaster
We can't carry switchblades (which is something I wouldn't do anyway), but we are permitted to carry folding knives of any size concealed as long as they are folded. There is a little wrinkle in CA Penal Code Section 653(k) that defines some types of folding knives as switchblades even though they lack a spring.

(See http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=00001-01000&file=639-653.1 )

There are no limits on open, visible carry of knives or swords.

Some California localities have restrictions on blade length. Los Angeles County, the city of Los Angeles, and the city of Berkeley have regulations. Berkeley is the strictest - You can't carry any knife with a blade over 2 inches long but there is a huge loophole for knives carried as tools. It's a law designed to be selectively enforced by the police, and I have a big problem with that in principle but since I don't live there I can't do anything about it.

The only real federal knife laws are the restrictions on switchblades. We can legally own them and keep them in our homes here in Cali, or even make them for personal use.

15. You cannot
bring a switchblade, butterfly knife from Canada or Mexico or from anywhere outside of the country unless you have only one arm. This is no joke. Its Federal law.

6. I'm totally against any restrictions or regulations on edged weapons...
I think its especially stupid that many states have laws against switchblades, butterfly knives, and gravity blades.

Those weapons are no more deadly that fixed blade weapons.

7. Texas has a 5-1/2" blade length limit
For a knife not to be classified as an "illegal knife" for which carry is restrictred from many places. Oddly, California has more lenient knife laws.

14. I know...
and I think thats sad.

I still own a machete and a katana, althought I cant carry them around with me but I can still use them around the house.

I do have a fixed blade knife that I do carry from time to time, its only about 4 1/2 inches though.

9. Knife laws.
Might be a little outdated, but I'm guessing that knife laws are something that seldom change.

12. Also legal to own but not to carry in California
Most of the weapons that are outright banned from manufacture are traditional Asian implements, also belt-buckle knives and cane swords that were favored by Mexican immigrants in the late 19th century.

13. No, no, no, I have an Irish Longsword...
and 3 daggers, count'em THREE daggers.

BTW: This reminds me of a bumpersticker I saw on a car once: "When they take our guns, can we use Swords?"
