BEAUMONT -- Rival inmates and gang members faced off in prison exercise cages where they could fight, according to witnesses in a Southeast Texas capital murder trial.

Prisoners sometimes called the 15-by-20-foot exercise cages "the thunder dome" or "gladiator school."

After one such beating in a cage in 2001, Luther Plant of Orange died. Shannon Wayne Agofsky of Noel, Mo., who is accused of killing him, already was serving life without parole and faces the death penalty if convicted.

In the prison's Special Housing Unit, rule-breakers are allowed one hour out of their cells each day. Matt testified that for that hour out, he must determine which prisoners to put in which cages, based on who can get along with whom.

4. That post was just for you (LOL) hahaha. Stateville is a very

bad setup. Illinois has one of the worst reps for pens and jails. Cook COunty is the biggest jail in US . One guy that I was familiar with his file was sent there and started to cry in the court room when he was sentenced. It was bittersweet for me ... he was a repeat DV offender. I say bittersweet because he thought he was a "tough" guy. Cook County has beatings once in a while then the lawsuits come. Cook County is BAD. (when I say beatings it's from both sides) when you go to Cook, you must affiliate yourself with a gang or it's adios to yah. Arians(sp) are big there (as in any jail and prison)then the different factions of other gangs establised in Chicago.
