A question about Bush's "Saddam Trophy Gun"
Does the president need to register a handgun kept in the White House? I believe that DC does require registration. Or is the President, being CIC, not a civilian?

2. Laws were broken
In addition to local DC handgun laws, military laws regarding looting were broken. The President, as the saying goes, is not above the law. Well, it's a nice sentiment, anyway.

9. Technically
Commanders are allowed to bring "war trophies" home. This can range from an AK-47 to a T-72 tank. Bush being the "Commander in Chief" can easily use this rule to bring the pistol back stateside.

As for DC handgun laws, it's the age old adage of politicans - "Guns for me, but not for thee."

4. That law exempts people above a certain level of wealth. It...
...applies only to the little people. :)

5. Republicans don't have to follow the same laws as the rest of us.
Some laws just don't apply to them.

You know, like "Animal Farm"? "All animals are equal except pigs who are more equal." I don't remember the quote exactly, it has been at lease 30 years since I read it.

Currently: All Americans are equal except Republicans who are more equal."

7. is shrub the REAL owner of the handgun?
or is it actually owned by the public? that is, was it a gift to shrub personally, or was it a gift to the white house or whatever?

20. Actually, it's considered spoils of war - or evidence in the event Saddam
is tried. Sine (as the old saw goes) possesion is nine tenths - the proper owner is the Office of the President; not Shrub. IT is technically in control of the National Archives and should remain as a Presidential artifact in possession of the Office rather than this holder or any future holder of that Office.

13. Trophy firearms are totally forbidden
No US military person can bring a firearm back to the US as a war trophy. The gun's legal status in DC seems moot to me.

14. No, as normal, gun laws don't apply to government employees.
that's why the SS, US Marshalls, et cetera can have them. Also, I'm sure that the White House is federal property, which is exempt from state and local law.

15. The gun is the property of the United States.
The DC gun ban does not apply to federal officials above a certain level nor does it apply to those in Congress and some of their staffers. Then ban applies only to law abiding citizens.

16. By the way, pResident Turd also has Mullah Omar's Brick!
"The pistol wielded by Saddam Hussein when he was captured in his spider hole last year isn't the only war relic President Bush is fond of showing visitors to the White House. Recent guests tell us that Bush proudly displays two other iconic items in a study off the Oval Office: a brick from Taliban leader Mohammad Omar's home in Kandahar, and a roughly two-foot-high cross made of steel recovered from the World Trade Center wreckage.
In this week's issue, Time magazine discloses that Saddam's pistol was given to Bush by military officials. The White House confirmed to us yesterday that he keeps the cross and the brick on display with the gun but gave no details.
The collection isn't entirely somber. It also includes a few bobble-head dolls depicting the president -- which, we're told, Bush likes to flick with his finger for guests' amusement. "

22. Gun registration in DC does not apply to FBI agents, secret service.....
feds, cops, DEA, CIA.

Only applies to honest civilians who love to get raped and robbed.

23. IIRC, there is no gun registration in DC.
I believe guns are just flat-out banned. At least handguns are.

24. Not flat-out banned
A permit is required to possess a handgun, but you have to be someone special, one of the select group of elite folks who think the term "the People" refers only to them, to have any hope of getting the permit.
