Man Killed Over 'Wedgie', Lawyers Say

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Prosecutors and defense lawyers say Jonathan Freel's death was a result of a "wedgie" prank gone bad.
Freel, 35, was among a group of men horsing around at a sports bar when he was stabbed in April 2003.

Michael Keith Williams is accused of killing Freel. The reason, prosecutors say, is because he was offended when Freel wedgied a friend of his. Williams is claiming self defense. Freel was 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds.

Freel apparently gave the man a wedgie, ripping the man's underwear clean off his body. To compensate, Freel handed him a $20.

The incident led to words and Freel and Williams were kicked out of the bar. The words continued, with glass bottles flying. A fight ensued in a nearby field.

Prosecutors say Williams walked away, hands bloody, while Freel collapsed, stabbed in the stomach. He died at the scene. Police recovered a knife.

That is one of the strangest news stories I've ever heard.

Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Kimberly Boyer told jurors that Freel and several friends had been giving each other wedgies.

Why???

And how does that escalate into a bloody brawl?

I fully support the rights of consenting adults to engage in underwear pranks, including wedgies, in the privacy of their own homes.

When underwear pranks endanger innocent bystanders, however, I have to drawn the line.

That's evidence enough by itself. But we all know, too, what the Latin cunnus is. (Gender masculine, oddly enough. Just as oddly, its rough, i.e. approximate, male counterpart, verpa, is gender feminine.)

I would have said that all this talk of cuneus, "wedgie", was just too obviously the Latin equivalent of cockney rhyming slang, boyish code for what they really want to be talking about.

I would, that is, if a "wedgie", and the otherwise inexplicable male practice of giving giving one to other men and revelling in getting one of one's own, weren't so plainly a manifestation of cunnus envy.
