Story from a Kansas State Highway Patrol officer :

"I made a traffic stop on an elderly lady the other day for speeding on U.S. 166 Eastbound at Mile Marker 73 just East of Sedan, KS.
I asked for her driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. The lady took out the required information and handed it to me.
In with the cards I was somewhat surprised (due to her advanced age) to see she had a conceal carry permit. I looked at her and asked if she had a weapon in her possession at this time. She responded that she indeed had a .45 automatic in her glove box.
Something---body language, or the way she said it---made me want to ask if she had any other firearms. She did admit to also having a 9mm Glock in her center console. Now I had to ask one more time if that was all. She responded once again that she did have just one more, a .38 special in her purse. I then asked her what was she so afraid of. She looked me right in the eye and said, "Not a fucking thing!"

The .45 auto and the Glock (depending on the models) were probably larger handguns more suitable as "car guns" than as carry weapons. The lady had what was probably a much smaller .38 caliber handgun in her purse. If she was married, one of the car guns could be belonged to her husband. Since they were elderly, there probably were no young children in their household and might have just left the car guns in their locked car at all times.

I sometimes carry a stainless S&W .357 mid sized revolver with a 4" barrel in the center console of my vehicle and a .38 snub nose revolver in my pocket. Since I am 65, I also could be considered elderly. My daughter also often carries two revolvers with her while she is driving, a mid sized S&W .38 cal S&W revolver in the center console and a snub nosed .22 magnum revolver in her purse or holstered inside the waistband of her pants for concealed carry. She sometimes carries a BUG (backup gun) which is a tiny .22 caliber mini revolver which she calls her "get away from me" gun.

My son in law likes pistols more than revolvers and has a compact .40 caliber Glock with a laser sight in his glove box and a Ruger .380 LCP in his pocket.

With Thursday’s shooting at Va. Tech I wonder if the odds of encountering a little old lady legally possessing three firearms would be greater or less than a law enforcement officer becoming a firearms fatality.

in the US, Firearm related officer fatalities comparing this year thru December 10, 2011 to December 10, 2010 are UP 13%.
That’s down considerably from 1973’s high of 156 but recent years are worrisome.
In 2010, firearm-related fatalities climbed to 61 line of duty deaths, 24 percent higher than in 2009 when 49 officers were killed & 2009 saw a disturbing 22 percent rise in the number of officers shot and killed from 2008.

In Canada over the same time frame 2008 thru December 10, 2011 there has been one firearms related fatality, Constable Vu Pham was shot and killed while making a traffic stop in a rural area near Leadbury, Ontario. http://canada.odmp.org/year.php
