Has anyone else heard this re: Fast & Furious?
A few of my buds here at work are Mexican immigrants. One just spent 3-4 weeks there on connection with the Pan Am games. We were talking about Fast & Furious and he and his brother commented that the sting operation was actually pretty successful. That they did use traces in the guns let into Mexico to capture "10 or so" BIG players in the drug cartels. Tracking devices in the guns were used to pinpoint the locations of these individuals that they wouldn't have been able to determine using other means.

He said they would never release such information because it is against the Mexican constitution to use outside nations to help arrests.

Thought it was quite interesting. It is such a scandle in this country, with blame being handed out. We are indeed aware of the dreadful consequences of the operation, but has anyone, will anyone, ever hear of such success? A quick google search shows there have been quite a few big arrests over the past months.

1. The woman
who sat beside me in class this past summer is from Durango and she said there is nowhere in Mexico that is safe - not even Cancun.

She said it is horrible what is going on down there and she and her family are scared to go back for a visit.

Of course this was a few months ago.

3. What I have heard is that
they lost complete track of any number of the guns involved in that operation.

There's a pie-in-the-sky aspect to that tale I'm finding difficult to swallow.

5. No, the technology isn't really even 'there'.
John stewart's 'radio shack battery' joke aside, there are significant technical hurdles to the issue. Plus, the 'head guys' aren't taking possession of these weapons in most cases anyway.

So, no, not really buying it. Our government straight up fucked up. The Mexican people may be getting fed a line of BS on it, to keep the unrest down. If I were a Mexican, i'd be pretty pissed at the United States right now.

Not so much about tracking technology...seems very doable (but I don't know!)

Thanks!

10. You mean they weren't up in arms about Holder, et al. Add that to the 30 indictments already.

When all is said and done, I'm still betting this sting ain't nearly as bad as gunners -- who love to criticize the ATF for impeding access to more and more guns -- want us to believe it is.

enforce the law, to impede criminal access to any guns. Please tell me about these indictments.

12. They too are big Obama fans. Not sure if they would pay enough attention
Edited on Tue Nov-08-11 09:56 PM by jmg257
to know who Holder is - maybe - probably - they are pretty sharp, political enough and into guns enough (but not toters here). They certainly know how crappy the situation is Mexico, drugs and corruption, besides visiting they still have family there.

One thing they mentioned is the willingness of locals to protect the kingpins as it being in their interests.

If the sting has worked as they theorize, it is a shame it may take years to find out. ATF gets it's balls busted for promoting some key figures in the midst of the scandal, but just maybe...

13. Took us 10 years to get Bin, a couple of years in a sting this big is nothing.

May I ask what is wrong with Obama fans, especially compared to the alternatives?

I think he said that they are Obama fans too.
"they too, are Obama fans"
At least, I hope that is what he meant, other wise I would be offended too.
That does not make me a Holder fan. Even before this, I was disappointed by his lack of action against the Banksters and BP.

Not every post is a challenge of some sort! :)

We take great pride in defending him and ourselves against some...more right leaning co-workers. This is where they show how sharp they are politically. I tend to fade a bit on occasion with varying levels of interest as new hobbies come along (like guitars), but we all stay up on things fairly well.

14. That was back when they were tracing them
It was with the cooperation of the Mexican authorities.

They don't even bother under F&F. Just hope they turn up at a murder scene, the Mexican authorities weren't involved.

20. Notice the Trucking portion of NAFTA was allowed as soon as this broke...
We had been fighting allowing the trucks in from Mexico for years and as soon as the screaming in Mexico begain over F&F the agreement was 'ok'd' and the trucks were allowed...

Coincidence? 8^(

Teamsters AKA UNION LABOR is going to loose a lot of jobs over that.

You mean the US was STILL violating its voluntarily assumed international obligations?

I hadn't realized that was still going on.

Canadian softwood lumber, Mexican trucking ... bullies of the world unite, you have nothing to lose at all as long as you hold the big stick.

By the way, for those fond of going after the "root causes" of things ... economic underdevelopment might just have something to do with the prevalence of illicit activities in a society, and bullying trading partners into accepting the short end of the stick might just contribute to economic underdevelopment ...
