Sheriff: Time For Citizens To Arm Themselves
The Spartanburg County Sheriff is known for speaking his mind, and at a news conference on Monday, he didn't hold back his anger and frustration after a woman was attacked in a park over the weekend.

Investigators said 46-year-old Walter Lance grabbed a woman who was walking her dog in Milliken Park on Sunday afternoon. They said Lance choked the woman, made her take off her clothing and tried to rape her. (Full Story)

Lance is in custody and was denied bond on Monday.

Sheriff Chuck Wright opened his news conference by saying, "Our form of justice is not making it."

He said, "Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it."

6. Tell that to the 60 to 80% of wome who are raped.
Also too, the young boys and girls who are repeatedly raped by a close adult relative or friend or authority figure.

You sit a group of 10 women down ask them to be honest and you will find that at least three were raped by their fathers. And it would be most unusual for less than 10 to say they had never had sexual intercourse forced on them.

8. you are not really at odds here
The point being made was that random violence in public is on the decline.

The victims you are talking about (and whom I talk about here weekly) are not likely to be arming themselves against their fathers, uncles, neighbours, co-workers, clergy, dates, friends, flatmates ...

But the gun militants of the world just love to drag out rape victims as the voices they choose to appropriate in order to shove their ugly agenda, an agenda that is actually against women's interests in the real world.

14. Not.
The death penalty does't deter crime, nor does having a gun.

Criminals generally don't read gun ownership statistics.

...and other 'reputable sources' of that type.

I live in Georgia. I know a Lot of people with guns.

None of them, as far as I know, have ever used their guns outside of target practice or hunting.

A friend of mine has shot himself in the leg. Twice.

Somehow I doubt that story would be 'headline news' in the gun extremism community.

23. Very few rapists/sexual assailants use any weapon at all
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, in 2009, the number of rapes/sexual assaults that were committed using a firearm was so small that the BJS couldn't assign a percentage. An estimated 85% of rapes/sexual assaults are committed using only personal force (i.e. no weapon) and when a weapon is used, it is most commonly a knife.

The fact is that the majority of non-fatal violent crime isn't committed using firearms.

29. "The fact is that the majority of non-fatal violent crime isn't committed using firearms."
Yes, that's a very interesting fact indeed.

The counterpart is that when a firearm is used in the commission of a crime the morality rate is multiples of what it is when no firearm is used.

For instance, homicide figures in the US handily conceal all the robbery events where the robbery victim was killed by a robber who used a firearm.

Conversely, the rate of homicide in the course of sexual assault, i.e. as a proportion of all sexual assaults, is actually minuscule.

http://crazyworld.blogs.goupstate.com/10450/spartanburg-sheriff-chuck-wright-endorses-nikki-haley-for-governor/

Anyone who knows the sheriff knows that he’s a bit peculiar with endorsements. He tends to be picky, as is his right. In fact, the only two instances I can remember where Wright lent his name to politics was when he stood up to nominate LaDonna Ryggs as the new chair of the Spartanburg County Republican Party (and his friends say they advised him to stay out of that), and an early, casual endorsement of Alan Wilson for attorney general during this year’s Republican primary.

I was talking with Wright about another matter today and asked him, not expecting an answer, when he was going to roll out endorsements. He told me I could put him down for Haley, and that he was, in fact, endorsing her.

“I’m supporting Nikki Haley. I like her,” Wright said. ...

This endorsement isn’t a total surprise, but Wright is one of the Republican leaders in this county that a lot of people look to.

Yup, there's the person I'd be turning to for guidance.
