Michigan AG (R-moran) says gun silencers for some OK
http://www.ourmidland.com/news/article_c7ac2dee-d5df-11e0-9c7f-001cc4c002e0.html

LANSING (AP) — Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette says gun silencers can be used in the state by gun owners who have federal authorization.

Schuette issued the opinion Friday.

“Michigan citizens who comply with federal firearm regulations can use suppressors to protect their hearing and minimize noise disruptions in the surrounding areas,” Schuette said.

Although suppressors do not completely eliminate the sound of a firearm, they do reduce the noise associated with gunfire in a manner similar to how a muffler reduces exhaust noise from a motor vehicle. Suppressors protect shooters’ hearing and also reduce noise complaints from neighbors in the vicinity of firearm use, whether it is near a shooting range or hunting property.

1. He's right.
I find gun shot noises to be annoying! And with more and more people shooting their families, sooner or later some of my neighbors will encroach upon my tranquility!

Why do you think that suppressors are sold over the counter in many european countries?

Much better to let them continue to sleep while you pull the invader's body in through the front door.

If you have ever been to a shooting range without hearing protection, you might feel differently.

5. The outrage by some over this is based in ignorance
"Silencers" are not all that effective, certainly not what you see in Hollywood.

They do lessen the report to the level where hearing is not damaged, a good thing.

They are well controlled at a Federal level

6. make MI more like France and Finland.
Common if France some ranges require them. Some hunting areas in Finland require them. Silencers are totally unregulated those countries as well as Norway and New Zealand.

7. You're always pushing for gun laws more like Europe's, right?
And you *do* know how tightly controlled sound suppressors are already under Federal law, right?

You basically have to go through the same hoops to own a sound suppressor as you do to own a 105mm howitzer or a Title 2 machinegun, in Michigan or any other state.

8. I would like to have one......
...you know, to take care of those people who think I shouldn't have one!

I live in a gated lake community in the country. Since I live on the perimeter, I have lots of critters coming around. Skunks are the biggest threat since they carry rabies, and occasionally they get under my house (pier and beam). I have close neighbors , and the only time you can see the skunks is at night, so I would like to find one for a .22 rifle. I have pets outside and cannot risk one getting bit by a rabid skunk.

I love all animals and would never kill one unless they were a threat to me or my pets. I can physically remove snakes since I hunted them for years, but skunks?.......I'm not gonna do it! I have been successful trapping them before, but your odds of catching the critter you want to get rid are small. I wind up trapping more cats and coons than skunks.

Everything has it's place, and if someone wanted one for nefarious reasons, they could get it, so why punish those who need them for legitimate reasons? How many people do you know with a silencer? I rest my case.

32. For your purpose I think you can avoid a gun
Try a high-power air rifle like the Benjamin Trail NP Nitro Piston.

With a heavy .22 pellet this stays just subsonic, and is quiet. With a lighter pellet it gets loud with the supersonic crack just like most rifles. It is capable of killing small varmints, and costs under a few hundred dollars.

If you want to get serious and don't mind buying or recharging air canisters, the Daystate Air Ranger is insanely accurate and fully proven in hunting:

It also costs over $2,000. You can get some good German engineering -- accurate, powerful, reliable -- in a Weirauch such as the 95L for an in between price of around $500.

I got one of their pistols in Europe, an HW 70. It's very fun, accurate and safe (the safety goes on automatically after each load). About $200 here.

That show just how completely ignorant some are of the subject at hand, and only farther underscore, WHY, we continue to win. It totally exposes how ill prepared some are for the debate at hand. As long as some INSIST on being unprepared, we will continue to domanate this subject.

It is amazing that some people use Hollywood movies, to base a real world argument on.

14. Still have to comply with Federal Law
Make application, pay the $200 for Tax Stamp, wait on Federal background check, get local law enforcement to sign off. All that can take 3 months or longer.

Then and only then can you take possession of the suppressor.

And no, they do not work like Hollywood portrays. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFY0aHftVHg

28. I wouldn't want to ruin my 270 barrel, but I'd turn down my 308 barrel...
Of course I'd also lop off 4" of it's 24" and go with 18" and the suppressor. It's also a single shot so that would cut down the blast more.

16. The outrage against silencers is ridiculous.
The only reason this has any traction at all is because people think that a silencer makes a pistol go "ffft" when it goes off.

It does not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhwWS5sU1tU

Watch the above video to see what a suppressor does to a firearm.

All it does is reduce the noise somewhat to make shooting less harmful to the shooters ears.

19. And once again....
...you demonstrate your incredible ignorance of the subject at hand.

"Silencers" are much better described as "mufflers" or "sound suppressors". They do not make a gun silent in the least. They merely reduce the sound output on the order of 15-40dB depending upon design and caliber.

And reducing noise pollution.

Do you want to outlaw mufflers on cars too?

You got the "douchebag gun insanity" part right, but it's yours, not the GOP's.

Or you could explain your vehement disagreement, if you actually have any points to make...

I enjoy them but complying with the paperwork, fees, and waiting for approval is a bit cumbersome. I'll probably build my next two silencers to save some money and time.

Seeing as how we just legalized them as well.

Also, they are still controlled and taxed (200$) by the BATFE at the federal level.
