Canada coddling prisoners pweshus feelings
http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/WinnipegSun/News/2004/03/18/386081.html

"Stab-proof vests for guards nixed"
=================================================================
Because, get this, it would send a 'signal' to the prisoners. A signal that the quards consider the prisoners 'dangerous'.
=================================================================
"If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause. "It interferes with what we call 'dynamic security.' We want staff to talk to prisoners, to see how they're doing."
=================================================================

Baffling just baffling.

1. I don't see a problem.
This is a prison we're talking about, after all. Where could prisoners possibly get weapons for stabbing? :eyes:

5. That's hilarious!

This quote is priceless:

"If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause.

Yes, of course, prisoners aren't inherently dangerous.

If they were, they'd be locked up in prison!

6. I think it's due to the idea that they will be rehabilitated and return to

society to be a productive citizen, as opposed to the American goal of completely and irrevocably dehumanizing them so that with the exception of brief forays into the same society that spat them out in the first place, they can spend the rest of their days doing their part to keep America's burgeoning prison industry strong and a perennial investor favorite.

25. How does a guard wearing a stab proof vest dehumanize?

Explain to me what is "dehumanizing" about a guard wearing protection when associating with inmates.

Why risk injury in deference to the prisoners and how they perceive you to be protected?

What if the prisoners can clearly see the garments? In this case, they would fulfill their function in their most ideal way, which is to be a deterrent and actually help prevent incidents from ever happening at all.

The article clearly states "Maximum Security" prisons.

These are convicted felons, we are talking here. Not schoolchildren. And since Canada doesn't incarcerate half the amount of non violent drug offenders that the US does, I'd be willing to bet that two thirds to most of them are violent criminals.

or many other prison-supply products that fill so many pockets.

I asked, specifically, what is it about wearing a stab proof vest that "dehumanizes" a prisoner. Please explain exactly how and where the dehumanization occurs.

...he must be a racist. But he's a Democrat so he's one of the good guys. But he's pro-gun so he must be a racist. But he's a Democrat.
I'm so confused.

I have had the pleasure of voting for two pro-gun, pro-union U.S.Reps; Jim Barcia (retired) and John Dingle. They are both NRA members.

want people to have the ability to defend themselves but at the same time want to coddle criminals. I think that if Canada worries more about prisoner feelings then the safety of their guards, then they are a bunch of dumbass'es and the dipshits that make these policies are the ones that should be working with the prisoners.

33. Nobody ever denied that taggants are used in European explosives
They have also been used in US commercial explosives for a long, long time.

The claim I and others are having a problem with is MrBenchley's assertion that the same kinds of taggants are used in smokeless gunpowder in Europe:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=118&topic_id=44507&mesg_id=44563&page=

That is simply wrong. Taggants are not now nor have they ever been used in smokeless gunpowder sold anywhere in the world.

Of course this is the same MrBenchley who claimed that the Catholic Church supports gay rights, so why would anyone be surprised at the duplicity displayed here?
