Interesting crime map for NYC
http://projects.nytimes.com/crime/homicides/map

You can sort the map display by weapon used, age, gender, race, year, and more.

1. New York in general is a very safe city
As with most US cities, high crime rates are confined to a few dangerous areas.

2. Interesting. Manipulating map actually makes me feel safer -- and I felt very safe before.

3. How so? You obviously don't live in New York City.
This is like listening to a PETA member talking about eating meat- Every answer boils down to "Don't do it"...

8. You would be safer in El Paso, TX. They had only three murders last year.
In El Paso they have more guns than people, but very few murders.

4. I always felt pretty safe in NY city, kinda stinks...
Not being armed but that's the way it goes I suppose. Cleveland...well that's another story.

7. Actually, I'm struck by how many are "dispute"
(including "domestic dispute"). I guess you didn't notice that.

Too bad the map can't be manipulated by prmary motive to see just what the breakdown is, because this is really very interesting information.

6. so this is the "five boroughs", right?
Population 1 April 2010: 8,175,133

Let's say 8 million for 2009. Understatement, probably.

Homicides: 412

Rate: 5.15/100,000

Rate for the US nationally: 5.0/100,000

Given that I've understated the 2009 population of NYC ...

Scary place, NYC.

Just in response to some of the comments here.
