I'm Back and a Hearty Welcome to Road Runner!
Looks like I am back for a 'nother round of Gungeon moderating.

Please give a hearty welcome to co-mod Road Runner! If you want, tell RR a bit about yourself as means of introduction (keep it simple if you like - this isn't a test to see if any of you slip up and mention your affiliation with any extremist groups )

In the meantime, a musical interlude... uh, supply your own music:

Back in Black

Back in Black
I hit the sack
I been too long
I'm glad to be back
Yes, I'm dead loose
from the noose that's kept me hanging around.
I'm just, uh, livin' on the side 'cause it's gettin' me high,
forget the hearse cause I never die.
I got nine lives, cat's eyes,
each and evry one of them is wondrin why,
cause I'm back!
Yes, I'm back!
Mama, I'm Back!
Yes, I'm back!
Well, I'm back, back.
Well, I'm back in black, yes I'm back in black! Ow!

wow, those lyrics really suck in print!

20. it was a long time

before I realized that the "little grey guy" (and I do note your beautifully correct spelling of "grey") was *not* a movie projector.

There. That's all I'm saying about me, and you may conclude from this Rorschach test what you will. ;)

23. (OT) The notion of 'correct' spelling is relatively recent ...
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 01:39 PM by TahitiNut
... in our history. It wasn't until the 17th century that English orthography began to predominate. Even through the 18th and into the 19th century, spelling style variants were viewed as an indicator of an individual's erudition, creativity, and education -- not in being compliant to some independent standard but in portraying the (rather poetic) ephemerals of language.

FWIW, it was Johnson who imposed his own style by inserting the 'u' in such words as 'colour' -- and by no means was it a generally-accepted spelling. Johnson himself often violated his own 'standard.'

I suppose it must always be remembered that English dictionaries are not prescriptive (except by language fascists) and that the English language, as a living language, is whatever those who use it make of it. Any dictionary (even the OED) is best viewed as reactive and reflective of a contemporaneous general usage, not prescriptive.

25. No, but I'm somewhat familiar with the story of ...
... Dr. Minor and the origination of the OED. There's often a kind of OCD associated with language usage that seems to be aptly symbolized by Minor.

(I know of nothing more intimately personal than language. Language is the means whereby we can actually alter the brain chemistry of others.)

26. gosh, and all I meant
Was that he spelled it the *Canadian* way, that being by definition (as it were) the correct way. ;)

I keep Dr. Johnson at my elbow, on one side, with the Oxford Concise on the other. The Oxford Bigger (whatever that slightly unwieldy 2-volume one is called) went into a box in the last office move and hasn't been seen since, unfortunately. Then there's the battered 2-volume Harrap's French English, the U of Chicago paperback Spanish-English, the Collins paperback German-English ... the paperback Latin-English went west in probably the same box as the Oxford, though, and that one I do keep meaning to replace.

Heh, I do have jfenton beat on the languages -- I assume most of those are in his 5, but I've also studied Russian, Farsi and just a touch of ancient Greek. Those alphabets being what they are, and my readin' and writin' facility all these years later being whatcha'd call minimal, if you were to exaggerate slightly, I've never bothered acquiring the corresponding dictionaries.

Anyhow, on that general usage, I've still got you beat. USAmerican usage just ain't "general usage"!

And now, let us recite some of our favourite Johnson:

Here falling houses thunder on your head,
And here a female atheist talks you dead.
Just a little o' that famed self-deprecating Cdn humour for ya!

The silicon chip inside her head,
Got switched to overload
Nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's gonna make them stay at home,
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was good as gold,
And he can see (no reasons)
'Cause there are (no reasons)
What reason do you need to be shown

The telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world,
Her mother feels so shocked
Father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turned to their own little girl
Well sweet 16 ain't she peachy keen,
And it ain't so neat to admit defeat,
There could be (no reasons)
Because there are (no reasons)
What reasons do you need, oh,

And all the playing's stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while
And school is out, oh and soon we will learn that the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles,
And the captain tackles with the problems and the how's and why's
And he can see (no reasons)
'Cause there are (no reasons)
What reasons do you need to die, die, oh

The silicon chip inside her head,
Gets switched to overload
Nobody's gonna go to school today,
She's gonna make them stay at home,
And daddy doesn't understand it,
He always said she was good as gold,
And he can see (no reasons)
'Cause there are (no reasons)
What reason do you need to be shown

(Tell me why) I don't like Mondays
I want to shoot the whole day down

13. Welcome, Road Runner!!!
:hi:

I'm CO Liberal. Born in NJ, lived in Nevada for a year before moving to Colorado in 1995. I was exposed to guns at an early age, and decided they're not for me. I'm interested in reasonable gun control measures that keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them, yet allow law-abiding citizens to have them with a minimum amount of hassle. I am opposed to the concemt of concealed carry.

We'll be in touch the next time I feel the need to use the "Alert" button.

:-)

A thick skin is recommended equipment here, but it can be very entertaining and maybe even enlightening to those who are open to hearing viewpoints that differ from their own. Personally I am drawn to controversy.

16. Hi Everybody! Thanks for the warm welcome.
Thanks for making me feel welcome! I consider it an honor and a privilege to be here. I will try my best to be fair to everyone.

DU has always impressed me for the intelligence and humor of the posters. I've always enjoyed reading the posts in this forum. Such passion! I volunteered for this forum because I saw it as the only way to ever get to 1,000 posts. I think I was selected for this forum because I've never posted in it! Go figure.

Thanks again, I really look forward to working with you all.

18. I'm a FatSlob!
Edited on Thu Mar-11-04 12:07 PM by FatSlob
I'm a 26 year old Libertarian Democrat. I'm a Realtor by trade and a gun owner by choice. I never shot a gun until I was 17 years old. I'm a civil rights activist and love money. Basically, my political philosophy is centered around the individual. I feel that individual rights are the most important, and that the state has too much power. I feel that minimal state interference in my life is the best. As far as guns go, I own more than ten and less than twenty, the number constantly changes, as I get sick of one, and trade it for another. My main shooting pursuits are with my rifles and pistols, although I occaisionally will take in a round of skeet. I support concealed carry, as it is quite beneficial, and a right too. I do have a license from Pennsylvania. I'm also an NRA certified instructor, and a former range safety officer.
