Woman helped mentally-unstable boyfriend obtain gun
http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2011/06/27/blessing.html?sid=101

A woman who helped her mentally-unstable boyfriend obtain a gun that he later used to kill a Clark County deputy sheriff pleaded guilty this morning to two felonies.

Maria Blessing, 56, pleaded guilty to obstructing justice and complicity to having weapons under disability. Clark County Common Pleas Judge Douglas M. Rastatter said he will sentence her on July 18. Under a plea agreement, the maximum sentence Blessing could receive is five years, said Clark County Prosecutor Andy Wilson.

Blessing had been, for at least 20 years, the live-in girlfriend of Michael Ferryman.

Ferryman, who had a history of mental illness and had once been found criminally insane and spent time in mental hospitals, shot and killed Clark County Deputy Suzanne Waughtel Hopper and shot and wounded German Township police officer Jeremy Blum on Jan. 1.

6. What the hell

She had been sucking his dick for 20 years, why wouldn't she buy him a gun too?

Remember Mary Evans, who never had so much as parking ticket before she sprang her paramour out of prison.

A young Knoxville attorney, blond and beautiful, had thrown away career and respectability to bust her client out of prison and vanish with him into the hills of eastern Tennessee. The mystery deepened while he, Tim Kirk, 37, a convicted killer, and she, Mary Evans, the 27-year-old daughter of a university vice-president, eluded authorities for nearly five months. The story became even richer, in fact, with their capture—the way they stole a kiss and held hands in shackles; the way Tim Kirk confided to an FBI man, "I ruined her life." Nor did there seem to be any doubt about love on her end. Springing Tim Kirk from prison, Mary Evans had left behind a romance with one of Knoxville's most successful and attractive attorneys. And 10 days after the escape, in a call back home, she expressed not one regret:

"I've never been happier in my life," she said.

7. That's actually not true - there are whole categories of prohibited persons, and an
FBI-administered system for background checks to help dealers avoid transferring firearms to such persons. I'm a bit surprised that you don't know that, to be honest.

Two things that I think would help reduce violence would be for states to be a bit more diligent in making sure that people who are supposed to be on the lists (those that have been adjudicated a danger, for example) are actually on the list, and finding a way to make the background system (NICS) available to private sellers...

Nice.

More laws are useless if prosecutors will just negotiate away all the penalties.
