Gun advocate calls Garry McCarthy’s views ‘nutty,’ from ‘political hack’

SPRINGFIELD — In a blistering counterpunch, a leading pro-gun advocate Friday called Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy’s racially loaded attack on the National Rifle Association as “too nutty to dignify with a response” and denigrated the city’s new police chief as a “political hack.”

Federal gun laws pushed by the National Rifle Association amount to “government-sponsored racism” because they help channel weapons into inner-city areas that then get used to kill “black and brown children,” McCarthy told parishioners at St. Sabina Church earlier this month in statements that were aired broadly for the first time this week.

“As much as we wouldn’t expect to hear McCarthy speak in opposition to gun control, it is equally certain that few of us were prepared to hear what actually came from McCarthy’s mouth when he spoke to the St. Sabina’s congregation,” said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association.

“After several minutes of gratuitous self-promotion, McCarthy launched into a racially charged tirade in which he accused the NRA and law-abiding gun owners of participating in a government-sponsored program to kill black people. Like most of you, we believe an assertion such as McCarthy’s is too nutty to dignify with a response,” Pearson said in statement posted Friday on his group’s website.

12. The NRA didn't have anything to do with the ATF's decision to allow 2500 firearms ...
to walk into Mexico.

But of course you will defend the ATF and blame the NRA and the GOP for wanting a thorough investigation of Operation Fast and Furious.

If the NRA had been caught smuggling guns into Mexico you would be foaming at the mouth. (And so would I.)

In case you forgot, it was CBS news that broke the story.

Agent: I was ordered to let U.S. guns into Mexico
March 3, 2011 6:10 PM

(CBS News)

WASHINGTON - Federal agent John Dodson says what he was asked to do was beyond belief.

He was intentionally letting guns go to Mexico?

"Yes ma'am," Dodson told CBS News. "The agency was."

An Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms senior agent assigned to the Phoenix office in 2010, Dodson's job is to stop gun trafficking across the border. Instead, he says he was ordered to sit by and watch it happen.

Just exactly what do you want the NRA to do to stop gun trafficking and smuggling? Note: they are not a law enforcement agency and they don't sell guns. The NRA does support the shooting sports and is in favor of allowing honest citizens to own firearms for sport collecting and self defense.

15. If he did that sound racist to me, but then the roots of gun control are racist.
Gun control has always been designed to stop minorities from owning firearms.

The Discriminatory History of Gun Control

Gun control in the United States is based on a long history of discrimination which
continues to this day. While blacks were the first targets of gun control measures, different racial
and ethnic minorities have been targeted over time, and today the poor now face economic
discrimination in many gun control laws. Gun control may be portrayed as a measure to reduce
crime,1 but even in its earliest forms firearms regulation has been used as a means to control
specific societal groups by keeping them from possessing weapons. The first selectively
restrictive gun control legislation was enacted in the pre-Revolution South and primarily aimed
at keeping free blacks from owning firearms and maintaining a white monopoly on power.

***snip***

By the end of the 19th century, the focus of gun control shifted from predominantly antiblack
to anti-immigrant legislation. This was also the first time that gun control was enacted in
the northern United States where there was almost no firearms legislation in place prior to the
late 1800’s. With the arrival of European and other immigrants in the country, anti-immigrant
prejudices arose and anti-immigrant groups did much to associate immigrants with crime.

***snip***

Efforts to tighten gun control laws in the North only began in response to a dramatic rise
in immigration. Prior to this period it was socially acceptable for an upper class man to carry a
small pocket pistol to protect himself from criminals. The perceived need for stricter gun control
laws coincided with the arrival of Eastern and Southern Europeans who were commonly viewed
as “criminal elements” in society. Armed robbery was frequently attributed to immigrants and
“foreign-born anarchists”.22 These prejudices were perpetuated by groups such as the
Immigration Restriction League and the American Protective Association, which supported a ban
on all firearm ownership by aliens. The public began to rally behind such legislation since these
organizations managed to convince them that gun control would keep gun-wielding immigrants
at bay and reduce crime. Most people were unaware that these anti-immigrant groups were
founded and supported by factory owners and other capitalists who realized that an unarmed
workforce of immigrants would have a difficult time unionizing in the face of weapon wielding
strike breakers.23

***snip***

The history of gun control in America is undeniably racist and discriminatory. Modern
gun control laws are less overtly discriminatory, but they certainly have a disproportional impact
on the poor. The justification for this state of affairs should be that the societal benefits of gun
control clearly outweigh the social costs to the poor, but there is no consensus of research and
facts to support this position. In fact, a large body of academic work exists to contradict the
notion that gun control effectively reduces gun crime. The comprehensive details of this
academic dispute is beyond the scope of this paper, but certain important figures in the field will
be addressed and some popular notions will be challenged in an attempt to provide a starting
point for those interested in a performing a more complete analysis.

4. I prefer lying sack of shit
Twice in a week now he's looked people in the face and lied through his teeth.

He's from Newark NJ and anti gun to the core, is anybody surprised?

Over the memorial day weekend there were a number of incidents of gang violence on the beaches. They actually closed Oak Street beach, claiming "It was too hot at the beach for public safety" and, when questioned by reporters if gang violence reports were true, he denied it.

The got a FOI request granted and surprise, all the 911 calls they had were about gang violence.

Now he claims, in Flaky Pflegers church, that there is a long standing Federal conspiracy to funnel guns to these urban communities "just to kill black and brown babies".

He's quickly becoming an emarrassment to Rahm and I'm thinking he's going away soon.

Not that the truth matters to some people, but the NRA hasn't said a thing about any of this.

Notice how all that ire against alcohol sales targeted at the poor and people of color seems to have disappeared

and he started hanging with a guy whose sons own a beer distributorship?

8. Chicago police are desperate to find a scapegoat for their own shortcomings.

Who does he think is killing "black and brown children"? Oh yes, his fellow Chicago citizens. He should be asking why Chicago citizens are killing their own.

That might require a little too much introspection for McCarthy.

9. ? back pedaled - -
A statement issued by McCarthy Friday did not address Pearson’s criticisms nor the St. Sabina flap, other than offering a toned-down assessment of the scourge of illegal guns on Chicago’s streets.

“The commitment of law enforcement must be to holding violent criminals accountable for their actions and at the same time recognizing individuals’ constitutional rights.

“Law enforcement cannot do this alone, and strong gun laws against illegal firearms are critical in order to maintain public safety and private rights,” McCarthy said. “Gang and drug activity intersect with guns, and all three must be the focus of violence-reduction efforts in our communities.”

The NAACP used a similar racist excuse for gun crime, when they claimed in a lawsuit, that firearms manufacturers were responsible
for illegal gun sales that disproportionally effected black communities.

They lost.
