Another Murder Linked to US Gunwalker Case
Another Murder Linked to US Gunwalker Case

By Sharyl Attkisson

CBS News has confirmed that ATF Fast and Furious "walked" guns have been linked to the terrorist torture and murder of the brother of a Mexican state attorney general last fall.

Two AK-47 variant rifles were found at the scene of a shoot-out with the murder suspects. Sources say the weapons were part of the controversial ATF program in which agents allowed thousands of guns to fall into the hands of suspects trafficking for Mexico's drug cartels.

This latest revelation complicates the already strained relationship between the U.S. and Mexico since CBS News first reported on the gunwalker scandal last February.

CBS News has learned that U.S. officials called Mexico's attorney general the day before last week's gunwalker hearing to inform her of the link to the murder

A bipartisan team of members of Congress heads to Mexico tomorrow as their investigation moves south of the border.

I guess all the bluster about gunwalker being nra/gop propaganda was just that.

Bluster.

3. The murders from these weapons will go on for years ...
I find it hard to believe that anyone at the ATF or the Justice Department would have felt that allowing firearms to be smuggled to drug gangs in Mexico was a good idea.

It's obvious that the ATF needs new management.

5. Thats what has me a bit puzzled.
Anyone with two working brain cells knows that the murders from the walked guns WILL go on for years.

Those involved, however high up the chain of command MUST know that this isn't going to go away.

We'll still be hearing about them come election time, and most likely still be hearing about them the election after that.

So what exactly do they think stonewalling is going to accomplish?

Are those involved that short sighted?

8. We definitely care ...
We just want to see our government enforce existing laws to prevent such gun trafficking.

The "Fast and Furious" scheme of allowing firearms that were purchased from gun stores in the United States to be smuggled into Mexico or into cities in our own nation was at best a foolish idea and at the worst a political plan to promote another assault weapons ban in our nation.

I know you oppose gun ownership but if you support the ATF in this idiotic scheme than you are a hypocrite.

I definitely oppose any gun smuggling or gun trafficking and the and straw purchases of firearms. I want to see our laws enforced by the ATF. I have a considerable amount of money and time invested in my enjoyment of shooting and I don't wish that money and that time endangered by incompetent law enforcement.

If you honestly feel that the end justifies the means and that the ATF allowing gun smuggling in order to possibly push a political agenda is a great idea if it leads to another assault weapons ban then I feel you should look at yourself in your bathroom mirror while shaving. Ask yourself if all the people that will die or be severely injured because of the ATF program is worth it.

We can disagree on gun control and you might favor disarming all American citizens. To me that's fine. I disagree with you but you have every right to your opinion.

But we are talking life and death here. When all is said and done, can you look at all the pictures of the people who where killed and injured by Project Fast and Furious and say that it was worth it?

Many of the weapons used in Mexico by the drug gangs are weapons our government shipped to Mexico or to other nations in South America. They ended up in the hands of the drug cartels because of foreign government corruption and also because many of the Mexican military decided to desert to the drug cartels and took their weapons.

It might make good sense for you to oppose our government being the arms supplier to the world. I would not oppose that idea as all too often the weapons our government sends to other nations are often misused.

You do realize that one of those weapons might end up being sold on the street in our nation and might lead to the death or injury of someone you care for.

10. No one will deny that
They want it REALLY bad . Somebody wants it awful bad at least .

I was thinking and 29,000 seems a bit high though . Just looking at the photos of Don Alejo Tamez's front door , you can tell they had to switch to American gunshow RPG7's to end the fight . That would make it 28,9999 . You can see the spatter at the base of the window and just above the door knob . Those things are real game changers and there should be a law against their export . I am sure it is covered under ITAR , btu I cant understand all that gobbledy gook .

And of all the skinning videos I have seen , the sicario getting skinned was still alive . And they always go for the pecker first . That sort of stands out . So most of those guys are probably not being killed by the Iron River of Guns Fueling Border Violence either .

11. I personally see no problems with monitoring multiple long gun sales from gun dealers in
Mexican border states.

While I am a NRA member I don't always agree with their positions on gun control issues.

Seriously, if I walked into a gun store and wanted to buy five or ten assault weapons I would appreciate it if the government was notified. I even would be willing to explain my purchases to a government agent. I don't even live in a border state.

I might buy one or two firearms if there was a great sale, possibly three.

What I have serious problems with is the ATF allowing suspicious people to buy a large quantity of firearms after being notified by the owners of the gun store.

Project Gunrunner, an ATF operation run amok
10:51 AM on Thu., Mar. 3, 2011

This CBS News report from Sunday offers a troubling look at a sting operation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms that appears to have gone badly awry. The operation allowed thousands of weapons to be purchased by gun smugglers in the United States and taken to Mexico, where they reached the hands of drug-cartel thugs. Some ATF agents deplored the operation, known as "Project Gunrunner," and they begged their superiors to shut the operation down. Those pleas were ignored.

Gun-shop owners recognized a suspicious pattern of purchases (even your most wild American gun fanatic doesn't buy 575 AK-47 assault rifles). They phoned ATF to warn them that something strange was going on. They were told not to worry, ATF had it under control. emphasis added

***snip***

The alarming part of this story is not that Mexican drug gangs are using North Texas for their operations. This is old news, and the fact is, Mexican drug cartels have operations in every major U.S. city. We will see more and more of this activity in the future. What should worry everyone is that ATF deliberately allowed deadly military-style assault rifles, pistols and even .50-caliber Barrett sniper rifles to cross the border and reach the hands of some of the most crazed mass murderers on the planet.

Mexico should be outraged. Americans should be outraged. This kind of insanity has to stop.

Now you can continue your rant against the NRA and the GOP if you choose but you have to realize that you will lose any credibility that you have if you support the ATF and oppose any investigation into their mismanagement and failure to do the job that they are supposed to do.

There is absolutely no excuse if the charges against the ATF management are true.

Every citizen of the United States should oppose the ATF management and its faulty handling of Project Fast and Furious assuming the charges are true and it doesn't matter what side of the gun control issue they are on.
